Bought this early GMC chassis and running gear. Don't know what year it is. Can't find any numbers on the chassis anywhere. Number on the engine is A228482182. Frame is approx. 174" long, 25" width at the front, and 46"wide at the back with a wheelbase of approx.116". Gonna stuff a Packard straight 8 in it.

Take pictures of the trans. and a brake backing plate. Make them larger & more clear if you can.
We can narrow it down to '53 or older with what we have now ...

Steering box looks like 48 to 53 and possibly to 55 first series.

47-54 AD frame rails are wider at rear than front. I am assuming Chevy and GMC used same frame.

46 Chevrolet PU. The one I had the serial number was on the chassis by the steering box.

Look at the pad the distributor is located on. The first three numbers there will tell you which engine it is. Like 270XXXXXX- Or 248XXXXX. Still a good market for 302 Jimmies. The rest of them are sellable also

Thanks to all. I will try all this stuff over memorial day and report back. I've had trouble finding any numbers.

Thanks. now I just have to get my eyes checked

  17. From the pictures that looks like a 47-54 Chevy 3100 (half ton) pickup frame. It is the same one that brading posted the diagram (above).

  20. GMC. More than likely a 228 or 248.
    HD trans.
The GMC and Chevy are very similar. The front xmember is GMC specific.
The shock type can help you date it.
    Lever or modern tube style.
The block will have casting numbers on it.
Maybe you’ll hit the jackpot and score a 270 or 302

I can tell you for sure, it’s not a 54-early 55. The kick up over the rear axle is much flatter on those than the frame you have. It does resemble the 48-53 though.

The first digits in the engine number you posted tells it all,A228 is a 228.

Half ton frames are tapered…..3/4 not sure, but one ton up are parallel rails.

Can you tell if the trans is 3 spd or 4 spd?

    It had tube style shocks

  27. Looks like a sm420 as far as I can tell from the pic.
There would be a removable plate on the drivers side for a PTO and a large bulge on the other side.
    Great truck trans

Checked both sides and tops of frame. Still can't find any numbers.

  29. There probably aren’t any
I think the only vin was the door jamb plate.
That chassis with tube style shocks (factory) would be a 1950 to early 1955, /2 ton with 6 lug wheels)

I don't recall any plate for a PTO but I wasn't really paying attention. I'll check it out next time I'm up there
