Folks Of Interest Early Stewart Warner gauge thread

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Pat Pryor, May 13, 2016.

  1. I saw you post this on instagram. Still trying to figure out if I can simultaneously like your post...and hate you at the same time. :)

Super score on a very nice gauge. Not even a little bit jealous. Ok, maybe a little.

    Another nice score SpeedOn...

Pretty cool that the 1956 Studebaker could have a kilometer reading speedometer - good evidence that they were exported to Europe.
    Who'd a thunk?

Good point, I never thought of exports to South America, regarding Studebakers with kilometer speedometers.

  7. Garage sale score over the weekend. Probably came off a tractor (I do live in farm country). Two SW block logo coffin pointer gauges, plus a VDO temp gauge and an hour meter. I could be talked out of this panel if someone needs it. Let me know.

  11. My Stewart Warner "Special" Hot Rod Panel. You don't see too many of these, particularly ones with no extra holes, that haven't been polished, and still have the original rubber trim. From what I can tell from the old catalogs, this is the earliest version of this panel. The speedo and tach holes aren't large enough to fit the later coke bottle needle tach and speedo. The later versions also ditched the acorn mounting tabs.

  15. The original American Graffiti coupe must have a later version; eight gauge holes but no visible mounts::cool:

I got this in a box with 3 other tachs . The others have hour meters in the faces with SW printed on the cans .

Just posted some pics over in the National/MotoMeter thread, figured I'd add a few here.

NOS SW panel w/ NOS speedo, NOS duplex amps/gas, and used oil and amps gauges.
    IMG_20211211_162200650.jpg

A pile of 2-5/8" front mounts, most NOS (though dusty behind the glass), one is restored and a few are just used.
    IMG_20211211_162918690.jpg

    2-5/8 flange mount water temp:
    IMG_20211211_163116244.jpg

Though it's rather scratched up, this panel and tach are NOS.
    IMG_20211211_163535836.jpg

2-3/8 rear mounts (white face 150 psi air pressure is 2-5/8")
    IMG_20211211_163606236.jpg

These two, a rear mount vacuum and 50 psi oil are some of my favorite SW gauges, though I've yet to find a fuel or gas gauge in 2-3/8" rear mount.

NOS 2-3/8" rear mount water temp with a super long capillary tube.

NOS duplex water temp and oil temp
    IMG_20211211_163554288.jpg

    SW speedometers and tachometers.
    IMG_20211211_163858707.jpg

2" front mounts, including 3 different styles of oil pressure gauge.

More 2" in a neat old Nordberg boat panel

    3 more 2" temp gauges
    IMG_20211211_164733589.jpg

And some non-SW stuff, all US Gauge.

@Okie Pete your tach looks like one I did for a fire truck.
Thanks to Chris the gauge guy for the re-face. F8F1B73D-E4EE-4549-BC98-E417D8D0D605.jpeg 8B1981AE-0653-4D41-8D9F-10BEC0056BF0.jpeg 18FBB03F-3729-40CD-AD92-1ADE1DE0E16A.jpeg

Yeah, Pete...that's a Stewart-Warner inspectors stamp. If you can make out any other markings on it, you might be able to tell when it was made. With a 2,500 rpm top end, it may have been for an industrial purpose or a very low revving vehicle. Even the old truck diesels usually were 3,500 rpm tachs.

I think it’s probably off of a farm or industrial tractor with that RPM range.

The logo is Fairchild Aircraft. That's as much as I could figure out. Otherwise it's a normal 2" SW tulip pointer fuel gauge.
