Can anyone identify the American [?] car in the left background?
Dennis Irving.jpg The photo was taken about 1960-61 at a British stock car race

  2. 1949 Ford business coupe, or, whatever the one with the back seat was called, IF iIm seeing that door handle correctly.

Thank you! In austere Britain, that was a 'super de luxe exotic' that fans would drool over.

1949 Ford Club Coupe. The Business Coupe has fixed real quarter windows whereas the club coupe quarter windows will swing out.
It looks like a 49. The trunk handle looks to be the 49 with the turn down handle. Also the door handles appear to be the '49 pull style rather than the 50-51 push button.
    So....1949 Club Coupe...

Hard to tell if it's "Club Coupe" (back seat) or a "Business Coupe" (rear platform). The car has no side trim (which all '49's) had, so it's hard to know if its a "DeLuxe" or "Custom" (that would be a good indication of which is which).

Another key is the external trunk hinges ('50 and '51 had interior hinges). The door handles appear to be '49, as noted earlier.

You're right; those sure look like swing out rear windows; missed them.

49s had exterior chrome trunk hinges, 50 and 51 were hidden. This one has the chrome hinges.

I was hoping someone would ID the car behind the Ford, for extra credit. :)

'50 had external hinges but smoother than '49. '51 had internal hinges.

Some of the differences listed here. ronhavencars.com/49_50_51_fords.htm The trunk handle on that one looks to be all chrome confirming the 49 .
It wasn't uncommon for guys to swap 50 trim onto 49's back when those were new though. I'm thinking that happened with 49/50 Chevys too.

I read... somewhere... that there was 50 changes from '49 to '50 Ford.
And lots more from '50 to '51.

How about the elephant in the room? The race car! The rear of the body appears to be cut up '49-'53 Anglia.

Their motto for '50 was : "THE FIFTY FORD, FIFTY WAYS NEW...50 WAYS FINER".

@ 55 Ford Gasser has it right! The ‘49 trunk hinge was more like a barn door strap hinge with an exposed hinge pin. The ‘50 had a concealed hinge pin and appeared to be one piece….until opening the trunk lid. ‘51 got the hinges mounted on the underside of the lid, completely hidden when closed.
