This SBC is in a project 55 Chevy. I was cleaning up the intake and saw a couple of questionable areas. What do you think ? IMG_20210515_194547323.jpg IMG_20210515_194539414.jpg

SBC intakes are easy to come by, why mess with that one.

If you aren't going to use the choke spring set-up you should be fine. You can get intake gasket's that block the exhaust crossover also.

I'd have to agree with the consensus, unless there is something so absolutely special about that one that you have to keep it I'd scrap it and get a similar replacement in good shape.

Sure looks to have been wet for awhile. It could still be a usable unit, but not very eye appealing if so.

No, it doesn't run at this point. It was missing many parts and I found + rebuilt a carb today for it and was cleaning up the intake when I saw the damage.

That intake manifold bolt next to the choke pad is not looking good either.
Unless you are on an extreme budget, pull that intake and see what the ports look like.
I see rust like that on marine equipment.

The rest of the engine seems to be ok. I'm going to see if I can get the engine running and plan on replacing the intake and carburetor in the near future. IMG_20210515_195025427.jpg

  13. If the bolts holding it on are in the same shape as the intake expect the snap some off removing it.
Looks like it sat outside for some time.
How confident are you about the condition of the rest of the engine?

I really have no idea as to the condition of the engine. It's not locked up and the seller said it was supposedly to be in good shape. I don't want to spend a lot of $$$ on it until I hear it run.

Judging from the thermostat spacer, it looks like that engine came out of a 60 series grain truck, which leads me to believe there was a rodent's nest of some sort where the intake and bolts are rotted. Either way, when you go to remove the intake, you're in for a real headache. Corrosion from mouse/rat piss is worse than from water. Hope for the best but expect the worst.

I'd replace it with a 4-bbl intake and a quadra boogie carb....

Ya, they are cheap enough, besides, it would be nice to get a peek in there before firing it off.

  18. Looks like a "Krylon rebuild" to me...I'd want to see some of the inside (at least intake off) before I invested any more time or money on it.

Fire it up, see how it does....the corrosion on the intake in that area probably won't affect anything other than not being able to use the original choke mechanism. Of course you'll want to swap on a 4bbl carb and intake, once you discover that the engine is OK, or that it's not OK.

It's probably OK. Pretty hard for mickey piss to seep through iron.
I'd pull it and have a better look.....as I was preparing to slap on a decent four barrel manifold in it's place:D

Could be a LG 327 with a steel crank.

I think it is indeed a 327, out of a truck of some kind. It's a mid 60's engine. I have already picked out a 4 barrel intake and carb combo but am holding off placing the order until I find out a little more on the condition of the engine. This was a frame off restoration and I wouldn't think they would have set a bad engine back in there but can never be sure what some people will do.

The pad that the numbers are stamped on is wide, like the early blocks...I don't know what you see, but I don't see it.

Looks like the stock 2 barrel on the 65 Chevelle 283 we had by the choke heater mount..For what appears to be a nice engine compartment I would not use it. However I would remove the oil fill because it has a PVC fitting attached. This shows its a later intake.

Itll work as intended but looks may be improved by grinding the choke spring housing down . Your not going to use it , real hotrods have manual chokes with a cable .

One of mine has an automatic choke, the other has no choke. But I've had some with a manual choke, as well.

Needs more carburation, to keep us go fast guys happy....
