Joey - Funny you should mention the RAMCHARGERS (i.e., a group of Chrysler Engineers & Employees who loved Drag Racing) ... @Bruce Hertel has been a family friend since the '80s (when he lived here in the Bay Area). Bruce was a Chrysler "executive" who has owned and been building (MOPAR-powered) Hot Rods since the late '50s ... including (an O/T for the H.A.M.B.) "factory-backed" record-setting Bonneville racecar. - Todd
The car certainly is pretty neat, but damn I'm in love with that Apache all decked out for pit support.
Out at Bonneville one year my brother and I came across the "IRON MAIDEN" T roadster. IIRC it was running a banger with 2 carburetors and frog-mouth scoops. The owner told us he originally tried it with the scoops facing into the wind. He said he got a face full of gasoline and turned them around...problem solved.
Here's a circa 1964 pic of Hertel's B Gas Dragster ... with that same injected 354ci Chrysler Hemi in a 1963 Scotty Fenn chassis:
A bit off topic for the H.A.M.B. ... but here's a circa 1968 pic of Hertel's "Dodge Boy's" B Gas Dragster ... with an injected 426ci Hemi in a 1965 Gordon Collett chassis:
1959-60 Hello, In 1959-1960, there were plenty of hot rod/drag racers coming up with their own high performance tricks and creations. One of well known race cars on the Westcoast was the Durfee Automotive A/Modified Roadster from So Cal. One of the most unusual roadsters we saw during those early morning days at the Bakersfield Smokers 1960 March Meet was the Durfee Automotive A/R campaigned by Cirino and Groves. (NICK CIRINO AND FRANK GROVES) It was unusual as to the overall look. A square roll bar, and the most unusual intake for the top of the 671 supercharger. Nick Cirino from San Andreas, California and Frank Groves was the driver of the Durfee Automotive Roadster. THANKS… @Dean Lowe Jnaki This 1959-60 version was the most popular, but they had been setting records since the late 50’s. With this set up, Durfee/Cirino/Groves set the 1320 E.T. for the A/H roadster class at the Bakersfield March Meet in 1960. Durfee Automotive at :33 Then, they added a 4 port Hilborn Injector system for the big 671 supercharger, for more power. 1965 Getty Images That final image is a far cry from the original modified roadster:
You are correct! ... Hertel's B Gas Dragster was a 1963 Scotty Fenn chassis KIT that was welded up at Ortiz' shop.
I can't remember what magazine I scanned this from but this style induction must have caught on. Here you see it on top of a Hilborn fuel injection manifold on the Baroumes Bros. A/G Anglia.
I guess that big snorkel on the Deuce in the OP was long enough that if any gas was barfed out it would just get caught in the extenda tube and slide right back into the bores Ram Air injected...maybe I'll reverse my Frog Mouth Scoops and see if it makes a difference...nothing ventured nothing gained...there's actually Threads on Scoop Direction...
Todd, How/what are you doing lately? Been thinking about Danville in the early nineties and the guys including your father. My ... [email protected]
