Motion Pictures Best scene in American Graffiti

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 38fordpickup, May 11, 2021.

  1. It's been 40 years since I saw the movie, but I got to thinking about a scene in American Graffiti that cracks me up every time I think about it. Cop in a '62 Ford patrol car, trying to be sneaky to catch speeders backs into a vacant slot on the front row of a used car lot. Unbeknowst to him, while he is sitting there, a couple of boys crawl under the rear of his car (I think it was some kind of initiation ritual?) and hook a heavy logging chain to the rear end of the cop car and hook the other end to a big lamp post. One of their buddies goes by a little too fast, cop takes off after him. When the slack in the chain runs out, the back end of the car goes up in the air and it tears the rear end and springs out from under the car. Remember that scene? Others in that movie that crack you up?

Mythbusters did a re-hash of that scene. It was funny also.

Poor Lumpy. (Leave it to Beaver) Ward Cleaver's chain, too. His name was etched on the hook...

Favorite is Toad trying to score some Old Harper.....takes ya back to your first underage trip to the liquor store. First booze I ever bought (being elected by my buddies) was a bottle of Ten High.....think it was $1.50. Liquor store clerk pulled the bottle out from the bottom shelf, under the counter and blew the dust off it.:) Completed the purchase and wasn't carded but walked out shakin like a leaf.:p As a kid it was epic..... Here's to simpler times.

That maneuver was actually pulled off in Cornelius,Oregon in the early 60's. Cornelius was a very small town (now much bigger) 20 plus miles west of Portland. There was a Tavern/Restaurant called the Red Robin, I believe the Cop's name was Marion ( notorious ticket writer) that parked the Police Car in front of it. I do know the name of the guy that parked a log truck right behind, Herb Corey, I bought a 58 T-Bird from him a few years later. The chain, or cable was wrapped around the front axle of the truck, and to the rear axle of the Cop Car.

I remember a bunch of goofy adult kids dancing around in the streets snapping their fingers while some lame guy kept pissing off the hood while yelling for Maria. But their enemy was actually Officer Krupke. Oh, wait. That's a different movie.
Actually, my favorite scene in American Graffiti is when that brat, Carol, in John's car got plastered with a water balloon. It wasn't in the script but they left it in. Classic.

  26. The scene where Terry is going to race, takes off on the green arrow, then backs into another car. Tells the person he hit to be more careful and speeds off.

  27. This thread confirms the whole movie worked. Every storyline was perfectly executed.

Because of its historical and nostalgic significance I have to vote for the Wolfman Jack sequence. Seeing the Wolfman in action at his craft is more an historical record than a movie scene.

  28. ....I would have to agree completely. Wolfman-Jack.jpg th.jpg
