Please explain how a B/M ratchet shifter functions on a 350 Chev automatic

I can't figure if it wore out or maybe I am.

    Go slow I am old.

which shifter? there are several different models. They don't all work the same.

Pictures are very helpful. If you can't post a picture, then maybe you can look on google.com for "b&m shifter", then click the "images" tab and you'll see pictures of a bunch of them, maybe you can find one that matches, and tell us what kind it is.

I never cared for them either, never seemed to work smooth or consistent.

I feel gate shifters are better.....

Wow, that price. I know it’s like everything but I think mine was about 60 or 70$ back in the late 70’s.
    Never any issues with it.

I never had one. But they sure were the rage in the 80's. I liked this better and still have it stored away.

I have never liked the operation of the Mega shifter. Having to put it in drive to get to reverse or park just seems stupid.
I do like the B&M star shifter. It can be operated as a normal shifter from park to drive using the lockout handle. Ratchet shift for 1-2-3 is a separate mode.
TCI sells the same shifter and actually comes with B&M instruction sheet for a much lower price, and can be used with 3 or 4 speed auto trans.

SAVE YR $$. Doesn't matter if
Period. Correct for your build they are junk""""
Any Type Ratchet shifter Brand ,
The B&m Quick stick and the Hurst auto where Ok .

    For the $250-350 range
Buy a B&M street stick / race stick or a Hurst pro stick , ( with a Knob)

On some of the TV shows they build a vehicle $100,000 plus then use a Junk Ratchet shifter nothing but issues,

How about using a Genie or Lokar? Is this a race car? Sounds like others have had better luck with others.

    Lokar are good shifters,
( none cable , I have Not used one ,cable)
Only problem or gripe that I have with the Lowkar is their gates , (1,2,3,) but if you're mechanically inclined ,you can re-gate ( notch for each gear lock out)

I know what you mean... local prices are nasty :(. I put a Hurst Promatic 2 into my avatar. Quality is good, though the chrome fascia is prone to scratches.

Some Aussie engineers will not accept the US cable shifters as "the gear indicator quadrant is on the wrong side of the shift handle". Law varies state-by-state, but some legislation requires the quadrant to be "clearly visible" from the driving position.

    Cheers,
    Harv

Yep looked into that, only the mega shifter is available for rhd and it wouldn't have suited my look. As the car is already engineered with the commodore shifter and it will never be out of rego I took the punt :D . I went with the RTS Quickshifter ripoff. Half the price but made sure to use a B&M cable. If it ever becomes an issue I'll look into a dash mounted electronic indicator or find a column that can be modded to 4 speed auto.

We are lucky that the dreaded pits only loom if the rego runs out or we get a defect notice.

It depends on what you are doing with the car, that shifter works good for a standard direction valve body. And you can move it straight from drive to neutral ( or slam it and it won't go in reverse ) yeah you have to pull it back in drive and pull the lever up to go to reverse or park. I have used them in several cars over the years. Now they just cost to much. I just sold a nice used one with no parts, just the shifter and the knob for $60.00. You just have to make sure it is fastened to the floor solidly.

Holy OsteoBiFlex. I haven't been that limber since I got stuck in a revolving door. And it wasn't near as pretty to see.
