Technical MY NEW TIRES ARE UGLY

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, May 5, 2021.

  1. I was working on my old beater tonight and while I was taking a break I was staring at my tires and I hate the way they look, they are black walls but they have bold lettering and some other markings.

Anyone ever sanded or shaved their sidewall's? HRP

  2. There have been several threads on it, Danny. Do it so I'll know the tricks because I also have ugly tires.

That will screw up the warranty on the tires...;)

  4. Yep. DA sanded all the crap off the sides. Wiped with some thinner. Looked great

I too have sanded all the lettering off of the sides of some tires with a DA sander, generally started with 80 grit in spin mode to get the high spots off, then switch to dual-action and buff smooth. You don't have to sand it super fine to get a good smooth sidewall. Helps to practice on an old shitty tire first.

Not as good as real period-correct tires, but it definitely helps the look.

Ugly tires don't bother me as long as they have a good personality...

Yes I have. Angle grinder with 80 grit then DA.

Are those the Goodyear tires you are running? You would have to sand all the lines off too, all the way around. Not worth it. Looks like a modern alloy wheel. If not, let's the actual tires. Looks better than a Hankook tire or something like that.

As the boss once said “ all traditional cars deserve bias ply tires “

towel city shaves their tires. a little aftershave and they look spiffy if that's the way you roll.

Couldn't agree more. Lots of labor polishing those out and they'll still look like modern day Good Years. You won't fool anyone including yourself.
Sell them and at least compromise with some Excelsior radials.

I know your wanting to retain the tires you have, but worthy of mention is the Cooper Trend setter & BFG's as they offer about the cleanest sidewalls over the counter, the question remains if your size is available.

So, HRP, this is tech week. You have your assignment. Show us your homework.

  22. Or, you can rub every curb and grind them off, like my neighbor, who had raised white letters, but now has what I call "curb walls".

  23. My bad, I had to buy tires at the last minute before the All Deuce Run a few years ago, They are a off brand and the shop I was at didn't have a bias ply in stock.

I'm not ready to toss these tires, I will wear them out before replacing. HRP

Hrp, your sedan is kick ass the way it is! I understand the smooth sidewall thing and the folks that tell you to run bias plys to make it a real hot rod are full of shit!

1182.jpg They look fine when they're spinning. Nice and smooth. As in your avatar. All the more reason to keep on cruising.

A few years ago when the Sears tire department had about a dozen brands of tires I looked at all of them looking for an uncluttered sidewall and they didn't exist.

Yep, if they are a few years old, not new as the title says, just wear 'em out. It's a time consuming, filthy job sanding them.
