I'm using split hidem to trim the front and rear edge of the vinyl roof on my 41 ford woodie. When driving in the tacks I keep catching the edge of the two "flaps" that come together to hide the fasteners. Is there a special tool or technique that holds the "flaps" apart while driving the tack so they don't become trapped under the head of the tack. If I had three hands it would be pretty easy but sadly.....
Use an electric stapler with the "nozzle" ,and slide it along inside the hidem as you go. Duofast is the best. You can also use a small windshield rubber "filler tool" but they are a PITA. Buy the stapler and do the job. [as a bonus you can keep the stapler]
Don't have an air stapler but that sounds like a good answer. The original method seems to be small tacks rather than staples but I'm not interested in original I'm interested in a secure attachment. The problem with the "finger", screwdriver, punch etc. is a lack of extra hands. Hammer in one hand, nail between thumb and finger of second hand leaves me short an extra hand to hold the "flaps" out of the way
Use a magnetic tipped tack hammer. A little easier. But stainless steel staples is the way to go. Their are 3 types of hydem. Marine, standard and convertible top quality. Marine, the staples like to blow thru the vinyl. It tears easily. The other two are a bit more durable. Just used some hydem last week.
In most households , he stays home getting "hammered". While she "tacks" it on the credit card No surprise at all Use 1/2" crown staples. If you use 3/16" carpet staples it perforates the vinyl making it rip along the staple line.
