  2. My only hope for getting a trophy is going to one that's giving out 25 awards and there's only 24 entries!

Like I said I’ve received a few and what’s said in the above post is shown below.
I’ve been going to a gathering on Friday nights for 10 years; the street is closed to everyone but the show cars. I’ve probably gone 50 times in the 10 years, so you can see I’m not a regular but many know me. My wife goes in the summer and we eat at one of the restaurants. There are many non car families and couples walking and it’s always fun. A few years ago a group of HotRodders started giving a trophy once a month at this gathering and last year I won what’s in the photo. I normally leave early as to not miss “Jeopardy” but this time I stayed. It’s the only trophy in my family room as my wife even likes it. I do have my Bonneville 200 MPH plaque under the TV on a shelf too but that’s it. E883AA5E-8632-4B3D-AE7E-00A752CF30F9.jpeg

The only trophy I got was for a 48 Chevy stocker, second place...two entries, if there had been three I could have won a third place:) Back in the 70's and 80's I hit a few shows, my car was OK, not a trophy winner, now if the show isn't in an area where I will see some old friends I don't go. I leave as soon as they start doing the "winners". I've got a friend with a nice 36 Pontiac "street rod" nicely done, he has quit going to some shows because "the local guys get the trophies", if there is a tractor ride he goes on it:) No trophies there:)

  5. I was at a show at a local pizza place, there was only about 15 cars there. I went in and ordered a pizza, sat down to eat it and it came a hellacious storm. When i got done eating, i walked out and my model A pickup was the only car left. I got best of show :D thanks pussies ;) it's fun to win a trophy, but it's more fun to hang out with like minded folks, look at cool cars, get new ideas, etc. Cruise in's are more fun to me. I like the reunion because there's drag racing and a swap meet on top of the show.

A 'friend' of mine bought an OLD street-driven and drag raced track roadster, neat black '21 T with turtledeck, flathead, Model A quickchange, flathead V8. Built in '51, by a famous old track racer, San Jose.
I said I'd help with the project (getting it all 'freshened up', mainly the mechanicals, the car was a rolling piece of rod history!)
We went to some swaps, then the third one or so, I saw him bartering with a seller for some trophies...
He bought 4 or 5 trophies, I said "Whatcha gonna do with those?" He said he was gonna 'pose 'em' in front of the T when we got done. I lost interest.
He rented some space from a friend (who had shops) and the T sat in a space, with a 4 foot square plywood sheet on top, with about 70 plastic trophies on top.
    I didn't laugh. It wasn't funny.

I sold a OT '66 Rivi that gathered award's like a turd gather flies. The buyer insisted he got them with the car. I had them boxed up anyway and gladly sent them on the way with him.
I'm sure I'm right when I say the greatest majority of the owner crowd are in it for hardware, and as most of you also know a large percentage got the ride they have from digging deep into their pockets.
I attend only two shows anymore. The local Lions hold a benefit show for kids here in town and the LeMay Marymount show, but will do the Goodguys in Puyallup this year I hope.

I'll go you one better. Years ago there were guys I stopped going to shows with because if they didn't take home the award they would go out the gate screaming and throwing a tantrum like a two year old. Gotta admit, it was nice to take them home but three decades later they are slowly being moved from the house to the garage. Dust and all.

When I built my Falcon gasser it only got a trophy at two shows. One was the trade school show where the high schoolkids just went crazy over it. The other was a show that had a "loud pipes" award, and they asked me to uncap it. Really was no contest with the BBC and 3.5" collectors uncapped.

But with original paint, and primer spots I never expected it to win anywhere I took it.

  14. This is the only award I ever got.

There was a show that a local talent made trophies for...Ones I remember were similar to the 'cam & lifters' one some posts back. I won a broken Arias piston on a bent rod, mounted on a finished wooden stand...
    It said, "Best Hemi".
Trophy was in the front seat of my blown hemi powered '46 coupe LOCKED in my Grandma's garage.
Bastards stole the engine, Moon tank, and my trophy.
Did they HAVE to steal the trophy? Never found out who did it, good thing.
Sometimes, trophies can make us...murderous...when they're with hemis...

Does anybody turn them down, yes I do. First, I always put a small sign on my windshield right where the event card is located that states "Please do not judge". The first trophy I turned down was at a Goodguy's Carlisle event and Andy Brizio Sr. came up to me and told me that he picked my Deuce roadster for the "Righteous Roadster" trophy. He was literally stunned when I told him to offer it to someone else. At first he thought I was joking and started to tell me where to be when the award's were given out on Sunday. When my wife finally told him that by Sunday afternoon we would be home, he finally got the point. The second time I turned a trophy down was at one of the larger shows on Long Island. We were sitting behind my car and two guy's pulled up on a golf cart. The went on to say that my '46 Woodie won best of show. I was very polite and suggested that they give the trophy to someone else. Man, I must have really pissed them off because they just got back in the golf cart and sped away. The one trophy I do display is one that I'm proud of. It's the Wavecrest, longest distance trophy from Long Island N.Y. to Encinitas CA. in our '46 Woodie. Almost 7000 miles round trip!

for folks who claim to not care about trophies, it sure seems like a lot of replies, assurances of same and mocking comments......seems to fit that old axiom...”me thinks thou protesteth too much”.........:D

I was asked to be one of the judges at a Benefit Car Show, one of the awards was Best Sports Car, There was no odd rods like MG's, Jags, only Corvettes. After I walked around looking at each Vette I noticed a guy following me. When I stopped at the next Vette in the row, he said, "Hey buddy you didn't spend enough time looking at my car, & I'm sure it is trophy worthy". I went back & looked at his bone stock Vette with the crying kid leaning up against it, and the giant stuffed pink dog in the passenger seat. Then I left & went on down the row of Vettes. I got back to the trophy table where my buddy that was running the show was, and he tells me a guy came up & said that I didn't spend enough time looking over his car. I asked if it was a white 73 Corvette on the back row & he said yes. He ask me to go back & look at it again. I refused. The Vette that won that award, had a custom paint job, & custom interior. The car was so much better than the cry baby's. When the Sports Car Trophy was handed out, the cry baby yelled out this show is rigged, I'm never coming back. He almost hit another car squealing out of the show as he left. Found out the same guy had gone to several other shows that year in search of trophies, and never won one. He could have bought one for the entry fees he paid that year.

  20. If I was ever offered a trophy (doubtful) I'd politely accept it then throw it in the thrift store box when I got home.

My cars usually aren't trophy-worthy, but I always thought I deserved a trophy just for being such a swell guy...still waiting on that one... :(

We went to a show one time where you could buy a voting ballet of the "Best of Show" for $1 each. It was suppose to be some kind of fund raiser.
I heard (from the guy that was doing the music for the show) that the guy that won the "Best of Show" trophy spent $600 that day! Sure was a nice trophy...
We didn't stay for the trophy presentation, so NO, it wasn't me, or any of the guys we were cruising with.

My brother in-law ran car shows in the DFW area for many years. On occasion I would lend a hand to help him out. He quit doing them because he got tired of all the whining about who won the trophies and it wasn’t fair. These guys would win something almost every time and still complain. Most of the shows he did had many of the same people and cars. There were several “clubs” that would come together and vote for each other. He changed up the ballots to try and make it where you couldn’t vote for some categories. There would be some entering different classes if there weren’t many/any entrants so they would win. I don’t blame him for getting away from all the grown babies.

If (BIG IF) I ever won a trophy, I would accept it graciously. So far I have lived this long without one and expect I will have a good life quite a while longer without one.

As many on the hamb are pretty darn old, and have probably have got many awards over the years, I have 6 that are very special to me and would have never turned down or throw it away or give to the thrift store. One is a HAMB pick that came from Ryan himself and I cherish it, I didn't win any awards ( I'm kinda of asshole according to some ) But some liked my car enough to pick the car not me. Try this, when you go to a show pick out some kids car that isn't all that it could be and if you win a award go up and get it and tell them it should go to the car you picked and give to them. I seen this happen, was one of coolest things i have ever seen. Redo the ones you already have take them to a show pick a kids car and have the club give it to him or her. Thats what Im doing now. OK I'm done ranting

The only trophies worth winning are rock chips, road rash and splattered bug guts. My car must be a winner for I have plenty of all three.

i got a trophy once. didn't mean anything to me. so i break off all the plastic car stuff and had a local sports shop engrave a new plaque for it that read "porn's newcummer of the year award" and presented it to a friend at a party he held.

i always wanted to do another one for a lifetime achievement in porn but he stopped having parties and well, you know, i am the king of procrastinators.
