They're 1953 Buick hubcaps. These types of wire wheel hubcaps were a big rage in the early 50s for a couple years..
Damned glad I searched 53 Buick wire wheel hubcap before claiming they were aftermarket. 1953 Buick V8 ~Single Accessory Wire Spoke Hubcap Wheel Cover w/ Center & Basket | eBay Black Panther nailed it.
MR48chev, you were so Right the First Time!!! Those are aftermarket caps, No Buick Emblem anywhere to be seen... Buick wouldn't do that, nor GM. Found some '53 full covers on eBay and they have large Buick emblems, just because the sellers say its so..... dyno dave
Please read my reply to MR48chev, look closely at the logos in the centers of the caps, no Buick emblems, means that they are aftermarket items... dyno dave
Following. I have a set(4) of these wheel covers that I believed to be 53 Buick and was going to sell. Hoping they are, indeed Original.
Count me among those that believe these are gennie ‘53 Buick accessory wheel covers.......Not common in my observation, but nonetheless I think OEM. Ray
Strangely enough most car makers offered these multi piece type of wire wheel covers as accessories. Rambler Nash Pontiac Olds Buick Cadillac Packard Chevy off the top of my head sold this kind of optional wheelcover 1953 to 1955 or so.
Those are 53 Buick as others have said. I believe the big V is because 53 was the first year of the Buick V-8. That is why it does not look like most other Buick emblems
Although it looks like Bullwinkle it may be a Castle with a drawbridge, a Cross and a checkered flag...and guaranteed there is connections to something in Buicks Heritage...Panthers ad sure slam dunked that mystery...
I went on a deep dive into this kind of hubcap when I was collecting parts for the Black Panther. The BP used Chevy hubcaps, which makes sense because of the seperate retainers needing a 4 3/4" bolt pattern. I think the Chevy ones are the only ones in that pattern. Pretty sure the other GM ones were 5". Possibly Pontiac is also 4 3/4". Anyway..after looking at a million pictures on the web did I realize that for 2 to 3 years, 1953 1955 or so, most automakers offered these caps. They were trying to make the cars more sophisticated, European, I guess. They are all different incidentally. They may look similar, but some have straight spokes, some curved...where the spokes emanate is different. The shape of the final stainless ring is different...caps and retainers are different. Most people at swaps don't realize how rare these covers are...I have put this sliver of needless knowledge to use. I've had Packard, Cadillac, Pontiac, Chevy and Rambler ones over the years. Chevy ones are by far the most valuable.
