Saw Earl Canavan on the list, but I've never noticed anything about his President Lincoln.

Frank Hedges A&W Root Beer dragster. I met Frank and his wife Ruthi at Union Grove, WI in 2003 when he campaigned a Nostalgia T/F car driven by Mendy Fry. Ruthi plays a mean banjo ;)

    Hello,

In 1964, Lion’s Dragstrip had one of the biggest All Gas Coupe and Sedan meets in the USA. Almost every powerful Gas Coupe or Sedan showed up for the races all day. I just happened to be there due to our close friend, Atts Ono making a debut of his immaculate red 1940 Willys Coupe.

What an event to make such a debut. But, as the old saying goes, “if it is not against the best, then there is nothing to prove…” or something like that. It was the first all day, Lion’s Dragstrip day since 1960, that I happened to be in attendance.

Atts Ono debut 1964 at the All Gas Coupe and Sedan Meet… Lion’s Dragstrip

It was like a candy land of hot race cars. The class had evolved into Gas Competition Coupes and Sedans. The strict, street legal rules were lax and one could see the everyday street guy losing out with his hot car versus the all-out race cars with tons of modifications. But, that is/was the way the class started to evolve, finally get thrown to the wolves, and disappear.

The above photo of K.S. Pittman versus Big John Mazmanian had some interesting results.

As a kid I lived at the eastern end of Westchester near Inglewood. Earl Canavan kept his Lincoln powered dragster at the far end of 83rd St, just a few doors down from Ted Frye (hemi/belly tank). At the time both homes backed up to an empty field where, as boys often do, we rode our bikes, hunted for lizards and snakes and made general mischief. That field is now the 405 Freeway. Quite often Earl would have his dragster out on his driveway preparing it for Lions. We would circle and circle or find a place to sit and watch him fire it up. He didn't seem to want us around when he started the car but he let us come near and look when it was just sitting there. It was a regular thing for this kid; go see if the dragster was out. Even then I knew it was a nice and unusual car. I would love to see more pictures and info about it too.

Marty, do you remember the guy that flew into Woodburn to drive some fuel car. They shut the strip down and he landed and later drove. Rodgers or something like that as I remember. Impressed the heck out of me

I don't remember that, the only Rodgers I can think of is Rich Rodgers out of Puyallup, drove a lot of Top Gas cars. He had a Brother named Gary, who also raced.
