Two stickers, one on the trunk lid, and a Hot Rod 100 on the dash.
I'm not counting the sticker the state requires on the rear plate.

    upload_2021-4-17_4-41-25.png a rare one from 1960

    Hello,

When our stock car drag racing was getting into the final years, we decided to start our 1940 Willys Coupe build. But, in the mean time, our mom wanted to drive the 58 Impala, despite having a heavy duty clutch and a 3 speed column shifter. She was little (5’2”) and had the bench seat moved all the way forward to reach the pedals.

My brother would not touch those lessons with a 10 foot pole, so it fell on me to give her the lessons around our neighborhood. After careful baby steps as to how to start and stop, then shift, etc, we were on the road. It took two weeks of daily driving for her to say that, “she gives up.” She just could not handle the heavy clutch pedal and coordinate it with having to shift constantly during the driving areas.

So, as explained previously, she said she wanted an automatic transmission in the Impala and that she would pay for most of it. Instantly, it was agreed upon and the trek started in several trips to the Torrance/Gardena area in the South Bay area of So Cal, to the newly created C&O Stick Hydro company. They were a new company with proven products and wanted to get their fingers in a lot of different markets. All we needed to do was to bring them a Hydramatic transmission and they would exchange it for one of their hot modified Stick Hydro models.

They converted the column shift and installed the new Stick Hydro in the 58 Impala. The cost was discounted because it was the first stock car that had a new C&O Installed for the street. Several runs at Lions were in a Gas Coupe and Sedan Class, but it was just to see how it would do against some competition. By this time, the 58 Impala was relegated to being the tow car for our newly modified 1940 Willys Coupe for the B/Gas & C/Gas class competition.

The cost was adjusted if we put on the big yellow sticker on the rear window. I said no to that due to the fact that it was so big, almost from top to bottom, that it was hard to see clearly out of the rear view mirror. So, they suggested putting one on each of the rear side windows instead. That was ok, but we settled on a 7 inch in diameter size instead of the huge 12 inch decal.

The C&O Stick Hydro drastically improved the starting line technique and we were always first off of the line in any encounter. Now, I taught my mom to drive the 58 Impala by dropping the lever to “D” and when she needed reverse, we showed her where it was in the shift pattern. There was no need for her to go through the stick shift pattern manually, as it was built. So, to her, it was an automatic transmission with no clutch pedal and a simple start and go procedure.
upload_2021-4-17_4-46-35.png what is looked like with a modification...

The 7 inch diameter C&O yellow sticker was intimidating, as not a lot of people knew what it was on the small windows. But, when they watched and heard the 58 Impala leave the stop light and shift itself with power, they knew. The stickers were a warning to others. No "teenage bantering" necessary.

The yellow sticker was always on the windows of the Impala, until I saw it driving away after I sold it in late 1964, before going away to college.

The black rims in 1964 were a Buick bolt pattern… that is another Impala story.

So, does anyone have a real yellow, C&O Stick Hydro sticker in their possession? If you could send me a digital photo copy of one that is flat and in good shape, actually in a decent shape, I would greatly appreciate it. I could send you some rare, early drag racing color films for your digital library in return.

I don't put decals on my cars, although I have an old HAMB gearshift decal I am still thinking about.

Got the same one on the dash of my '57. I've got some more of these BobK stickers if anyone wants one/some, just send me a message with your mailing address and I'll get them to you.

It appears many of you don't know the difference between a decal and a sticker.

  20. In my 1952 Mercury, this sticker is inside the glovebox. For those of you who don't know Norwegian:

"Keep the pilsner beer as ut is, say no to alcohol guardianship"

In Norway in the eighties, the government planned to do like the Swedes and lower the maximum alcohol content of beer sold in usual stores from 4.7% to 3.5%. Some journalists found out about this and started "The Norwegian peoples federation for preserving the pilsner beer"
The membership was priced the same as one beer, and they printed full side color ads in their newspapers informing the public about the governments plans. They soon got twice as many members as the society against alcohol consymption, and the law (and beer) was not changed. Still today we can go to the store and buy 4.7%beer. But if you want any stronger, you have to go to the government controlled and owned "Vinmonopolet" (The wine monopoly).
These stores have special opening hours (of course shorter) and are closed the day before election day and other special days. So if you come to Norway and want wine for your dinner, or a whiskey before bedtime: PLAN AHEAD!

<sigh> I started this thread - I guess my pictures were actually of stickers and machine cut Cricut transfers made by my wife.

We made it 5 pages before your "correction".

In my former trade, we call capacitors "capacitors", when talking to a mechanic, I call them "condensers"...

But I do know not to let English teachers rebuild transmissions.
