The components for this build, and more importantly the builder, make this a thread that will certainly be worth following!

 

The driver side frame horn required more work, due to damage and repair done long ago. I had to form up a filler piece, and do it a little different than the other side. When it's ground down, it should finish out well.

 

Man it looks like having your buddies frame jig is really paying off.

 

Great finger saving tip when using a band saw for small part fabrication. Thanks for sharing.

We should ask Marty to start a thread on finger saving tips. That alone is worth reading.

And Marty even your welds to be ground smooth look better than some of my finish welds. That's it I'm selling everything and taking up bird watching!

 

First we need pictures of Marty's hands to make sure he's got all his fingers, and no big scars!

 

That there is some top notch work! I’m a huge fan of saving original parts.

 

This is making the frame work I want to do on y '26 Chevy much more likely. My "helpers" had almost changed my mind. I don't have a jig but access to a really good table.

Val, I have been very lucky, as were my three older brothers, all in metal fabrication for a living, and hobbies as well. None of us suffered any severe hand damage, in a combined 200 year period. Knock on wood !

 

I got the K-member installed this morning, and rough ground some of the welds.

 

Set the body on, now to slice the sub-rails, so it can drop down. More later !

 

Been watching woodpeckers knocking on some of the trees in my woods. Out in the garage a few days back and it sounded like someone was rapping on the back of the house. Turned out to be a Peliated (not sure of spelling) woodpecker on a stumpwood chips flying everywhere just behind the house. Woody was having one whale of a time...kind of like Marty makin' kindlin'

 

I guess we all do some bird watching. After deer season I put the trimmings out for the local wildlife. It attracted some golden Eagles. Note the big deer hunk in the flying ones talons. One tried to lift a whole ribcage and got it off the ground.

 

Hey Marty,

I hot riveted my '32 chassis together for my 29 build. It wasn't that hard. Got the rivets and bucking bars from here: http://bigflatsrivet.com/ and used a 5x rivet gun I picked up off eBay. The hardest part for me was not marring the frame rails with the rivet gun. There are a few pics on page 2 of my build thread of how I did it.

The number just denotes the power and size rivet it will work with. 3x, 4x, 5x are the ones you would want for the size of rivets on a 32 frame. Mine was a Cleco gun which seem to be pretty common. You could do it by hand with a big hammer but I found a used gun on eBay pretty cheap.

Marty, I read those 2 books in 3 evenings after work. They were a wonderful escape back in time. perfect therapy in a chaotic world. Tell Jim I loved the books and was lucky enough to find autographed copies. Loving this thread! Thanks for all this.

Marty, will the frame be boxed, or left open? Also, do you plan on adding rear legs to make the K-member an X-member?

Just a thought from dirt racing past here in the NE: some racers used to infill the open channels with hardwood after the chassis was fabricated. To see one was quite a sight, not to mention on the well-done ones, a work of art. I can't imagine doing it myself, as I am lousy working with wood, but for someone good with woodworking, it would certainly be different.

Dave, the frame will be left open, and plans are for an un-split wishbone.

 

Dang, Marty, I wish I'd known about you a long time ago. You could have adopted me and taught me how to do things right. Come to think about it, you could still adopt me. I don't eat much, I'm a damned good cook, I'd do my own laundry, I know how to read a ruler, weld, I've got my own 4# hammer and 5X rivet gun and I'm mostly housebroke. This could be a win-win for both of us.

 

I guess the lack of response from Marty means no, huh?

 

Alan, I apologize, as I missed your post. It's a shame we don't live closer, as it would no doubt be fun to work together. I am thinking of buying a #5 gun, when the time comes, and should be back on this project early next week. Thanks for the kind words !
