    Hello,

The small town of Escondido has hot rod roots and is supportive of community arts development. One such community event has been noted as a “Walk through the culture and history of Escondido.”

During the normal year, Escondido is well known in So Cal as the town that has one of the weekly cruising hot rods down the major thoroughfare in the downtown center. It has a coo history and was depicted by this long mural.

But, for us, this is what the whole long road trip to inland San Diego County is what draws most people from April to September of every year. Except for 2020 and this year.

Escondido is about an hour drive from central OC and the beaches. Or about 30 minutes from downtown San Diego.

From several years ago at a car/motorcycle gathering, I had my old Chevy pick up as an abstract easel display, I was just having a bit of fun to distract people and make them ask questions. That is the fun thing about art, it never has to answer for it self, it just is !

    Hello,
As far as the City of Costa Mesa is concerned, it is close to the beach, has a central business district and industrial tracts that allow “stuff” to flow into our economy. In other words, it has what most cities have to draw them to the city for residents and workers.

“Since its incorporation, Costa Mesa has turned from quiet suburban community with deep farming roots to a world-class city featuring some of the best restaurants, retail centers, and cultural arts in the nation, in addition to being the capitol of the action sports industry.”

Who hasn’t heard of the South Coast Plaza, one of the best indoor malls in the USA? High end to everyday shopping prices are all under one roof. All types of tasteful restaurants from Dim Sum to McDonalds. Now the City of Costa Mesa is now adding cultural public art to be displayed all around the community. Old cars do have history in Costa Mesa.

    Jnaki

Also, let’s not forget the small industrial shops and buildings that were the basis for the early sailboat industry back in those days. But as history goes, ART is now playing a huge part of the cultural side of Costa Mesa with the famous, Performing Arts Center in the South Coast Plaza Region and the History Museum going up soon. And… large corporations being a part of the landscape, now, alongside of the remnants of the farming industry that goes back plenty of years in history.

Even donuts have a history in Costa Mesa and with the new huge donut sign/company recently opened. World famous, huge donut company Randy’s Donuts has opened up their latest store in Costa Mesa.
    upload_2021-4-3_4-38-20.png
"Randy’s Donuts is an unquestionable icon of 1950s Los Angeles for obvious reasons: it is a typical mid-century drive-up restaurant with a giant donut on its roof..."

Goat Hill is well known in the area. The Goat Hill Junction Railroad is one of the only 1/8th scale ride on railroads in California. You sit on top, hang on and go for a spin on the winding track with 360 degree views all over So Cal. It is a few miles away from the colorful artwork box.

  11. Some art work by Bruce Kaiser. I used to look forward to these every year.Bruce did the art work for the Ty-Rods Old Timer's Reunion T-shirts and mugs. The great part was that he did two different designs for the front and back of the shirts.Sometimes it would be just a different view of the same subject or it would be two entirely different pictures.A disclaimer here:I'm not sure the 1994 and 1995 efforts were his work but all the others are. Somehow the mugs have remained relatively unscathed(a couple of cracks and chips here and there) and at least they still fit better than the T-shirts do!
    As an aside I attended all of these shows with my 1955 Safari except for the 2001 show.Somebody got it for me as I was undergoing aggressive 21stTy-RodsMugs 1993.JPG 22ndTy-RodsMugs 1994.JPG 23rdTy-RodsMugs 1995Side1.JPG 23rdTy-RodsMugs 1995Side2.JPG 24thTy-RodsMugs1996Side1.JPG 24thTy-RodsMugs1996Side2.JPG 25thTy-RodsMugs1997Side1.JPG 25thTy-RodsMugs1997Side2.JPG 26thTy-RodsMugs 1998Side1.JPG 26thTy-RodsMugs 1998Side2.JPG 27thTy-RodsMugs 1999Side1.JPG 27thTy-RodsMugs 1999Side2.JPG 28thTy-RodsMugs2000Side1.JPG 28thTy-RodsMugs2000Side2.JPG 29thTy-RodsMugs2001Side1.JPG 29Ty-RodsMugs2001Side2.JPG radiation therapy at the time.

The 2009 installation depicts the City of San Clemente’s founder, Ole Hanson’s office and the historic Casino in North San Clemente.

    Hello,

With the pandemic rules being eased, access to these works of art on Avenida Del Mar, the downtown main drag is easier. The mask rule is still in effect and all of the restaurants have outdoor dining all along this street. But, the patrons are coming back to the downtown area to see the works of art and to stroll down the two block long shopping area heading toward the San Clemente Pier and Beach. We are not out of the woods as yet, but, it gives some feeling of being outdoors and seeing what the small city downtown has to offer.
    upload_2021-4-10_3-31-34.png
Before, it was a little shaky stopping and admiring the art works along the street. But, those that wear masks have their vaccine shots, seem to be venturing outside to see what is happening in the popular downtown area.
    upload_2021-4-10_3-32-35.png
The artwork is by Jay Fisher and the tile work by Michael King is located in the first block of the downtown area from Coast Highway towards the ocean.

When the pandemic was not around, closing everything, this whole main downtown street, Avenida Del Mar was always closed during the first weekend of June for the long running downtown hot rod show.

25th Annual San Clemente Car Show

    NEW DATE FOR 2021:

    SATURDAY, SEPT 11th - 10am to 3pm

"We want to thank you for your continued support of the San Clemente Car Show and the Downtown Business Association. In order to deliver the best Car Show experience possible, we have rescheduled the date for the 25th Anniversary Car Show, which is now scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 11, 2021 — with the intent to return to mid-June in 2022."

Hot rod, woody, surfing murals are located all over the city as part of the cultural arts program. The city is now a little brighter and definitely more colorful.

  15. Taking a break from lettering a 1/25th scale race car body(the second iteration)for a friend of mine and looking at some of the art work scattered around the walls of my shop. Remembering some old friends who left us way before their time and my eyes fix of several panels done by Deadbeat Jeff Shea.
Jeff used to post on the HAMB periodically and he was not only a pinstriper but his main craft was doing some incredible tattoo work. When he had his shop(with Jaime Litwalk) on Woodward Avenue known as "Electric Superstition" he started holding an event called the,"Broken Dream Cruise" which was held the week prior to the Woodward Dream Cruise. That was before the Cruise got so big.
It was just a bunch of guys getting together and trading war stories and maybe slinging some paint(and ink).Sadly it came to an abrupt end when one gentleman attending decided to see how many donuts he could do in front of the shop right in the middle of Woodward Ave. on a Saturday morning! Within five minutes there were a half dozen police cruisers there. One guy was doing a joke photo op on his mini bike pretending that he had done the donuts and the police were going to arrest him for doing it! They must have had TOO MANY donuts that morning!
Anyway Jeff moved the event to his home for several years and it was even more well attended although there wasn't much room for doing donuts.
Sadly Jeff passed away a few years ago at the age of 49. Don't know the reason but I do know he had some severe allergies which may have caused it. Whatever the case it was a sad day.
So I thought I would post up some of the panels he did for the annual show. He would always use a different material every year;even doing one in Spanish on black velvet! He was definitely one of a kind and he is missed. I also enclosed a picture of Jeff signing my wife's hat at one of the panel jams. Hope you enjoy them and if you have any of his work please post a picture of it. 23. Thought I would post up some art from other people. Most of these I own except for the DeWayne Connott striping brush handle, the Nick Hartzell tiki stuff,Shane's truck, and the 57 Chevy sculpture which I would love to have but don't have $20,000 to buy it.
I'll try and list the artists according to the order they are posted in.
#1 is a panel that Deadbeat Dan Barnett did for me many years ago.Dan is a tattoo artist from Texas as well as a pinstriper. He used to post on here a lot but haven't seen any for some time now.
#2 is a painting done on a Mack striping brush handle by DeWayne Connott from Pennsylvania.Believe it or not he does smaller paintings than that!
#3 &#4 is a race car made from saxophone parts that was given to me by a good friend. It was done by someone named Dick Carl in 2000 and is called,"Scrapture" and that is all I know about him.
#'s 5 through 8 are the first panels I ever bought back in 1967 done by a guy named Don Penttila out of Sutton Mass. Don used to sell these at car shows and did some beautiful gold leaf work.
#9 is a water color done by the late Jim Rich from Ann Arbor Michigan and was a tribute to his dad's Chevy.Jim gifted it to me just before he passed.
#10 is the first panel ever done by my friend;the late Johnny Ray Price who built some really kick ass custom cars in Dayton Ohio.He also did a painting for my wife on the button of her camera! What made it all the more amazing is he only had one eye!
#11 & #12 is a birthday card that was done for me by another good friend and great pinstriper named Larry Hook out of Rhode Island. Not only is he a great painter he also has restored several historic hot rods including Norm Wallace's 32 and the Bannister Bros. Deuce.
#13 & #14 is the work of Nick Hartzell of Lambertville Michigan;another fantastic artist and friend.Done on the back of an HHR for another friend.
#'s 15 though 17 is a panel gifted to me by my good friend Peter (Peter Gunn)Cangemi out of Syracuse NY. He did a picture of me doing an excavation of a tomb with a striping brush and if you look closely you can see red and blue stripes on the bones of the skeleton! The back side is painted with chameleon paint and flake and multicolored striping.
#18 is a painting of a motorcycle done by a very old friend(we started striping the same year)Richie Canto of Wakefield Mass. It was done by him standing on a ladder overlooking the canvas on the floor and pouring the paint slowly out.
#19 is the rear of my badass striping partner Shane Syx out of Fairborn Ohio.He re-paints this truck about every two years and it has about 300,000 miles on it.Some of the stories of his escapades would fill a good sized book.
#20 is a photo montage of my Safari and a bunch of surfboards done by my good friend and great photographer Wayne Edwards out of Grand Rapids Michigan. Was just turned 80 and is building a Kaiser convertible custom.
The next picture is what I believe is an old race car front spoiler I bought in an antique shop many years ago for $5.They were going to throw it out. I love the gold leaf ladies on it.Have no idea who painted it.Made of aluminum.
The last two are of a sculpture that was displayed in our town for awhile and when it didn't sell was moved elsewhere.Artists name is T.J.Aiken and he worked out of a shop in Blissfield Michigan called Flatlanders.
And there you have it folks;my contribution to the Saturday Art Show. Hope you enjoy them. Hello,

When my wife and I moved to a new house in a different coastal city, it was two stories tall. The stairwell was all glass facing the ocean and the adjoining walls were stark white. We lived with the stark white walls for a year and noticed that the sun, as it moved during the year, created a lot of glare. So, my wife came up with this wall art hanging. It started out as a gift, but eventually ended up as a project for both of us.

She relented to have me participate with some hot rod/drag race panels. I even did some overlaying flames in different colors. Of course, there was the prerequisite surfing and a copy of our Harley Sportster custom motorcycle panels thrown in place.

The one panel above the Sidewinder drag racer was a miniature version of one colorful art print we had on another wall of our house. From a 48 inch square down to a miniature 16x16 inch miniature panel. It lasted the whole time we were in the house, since it was located in a shaded area, away from the sun.

    Jnaki

We had fun creating panels that went along with our, then, late 20-something lifestyle. Hot rods and drag racing ideas live forever, in all sorts of ways. The sad part of the story was that we did get a lot of great comments from friends and family visits, but within two years, design faded too much to keep up on that white wall. A white wall battles the sun a lot better.

    Hello,

My wife and I were the only people in this South OC store. We all had masks and the manager was very accommodating. As we walked into the So Cal store, we remembered the many times we had been in there over the years for other mattress purchases. But as we all know, mattresses last a long time if they are of some quality. Some things get admired, but were not the main thing on the store visits.

We had noticed the artwork on the longboard hanging in the entrance to the store. But, never gave it any thought. This time I noticed some techniques that were specific to one of the most sought after artists in this whole So Cal area.

Drew Brophy was/is well known in the surfing world as well as the art world. His commissioned art has been all over the world.
    upload_2021-4-24_4-29-41.png

Along with the fabulous art work, the longboard was made in the style that we used to see coming out of some of the top surfboard shops. Those custom order shapes included the extra techniques of balsawood trim nose pieces, triple parallel redwood stringers and a redwood/balsa shaped tailblock that was so popular during the 1960-65 era of So Cal surfboard styles.
    upload_2021-4-24_4-30-34.png

    Jnaki

I had a series of three longboards with one of each. The first was a wide balsa wood stringer instead of redwood down the center, for weight savings. That ended with a redwood block on the tail for protection. The second was the standard, (at the time) three redwood stringers for strength of the shape in the special order Phil Edwards Model #4 from Hobie. The final board was a redwood tailblock and nose with a single 2 inch balsawood stringer. The final touch was a reversed fin instead of a normal trailing edge fin like all other surfboards.

There were the surfboard colors that added some contrast to the special techniques, but the artwork did not start until the late 70’s through today with some pretty creative art.
    upload_2021-4-24_4-31-46.png
While looking at the clean lines of the shaped, 3 stringer longboard hanging from the ceiling, the view to the street had another custom art piece hanging on the entrance wall.

Shades of early stand up surfing on the inflatable rubber rafts, that got a lot of us started in surfing. The rubber rafts were the start of the bodyboarding techniques for a million people at the local beaches all over the world. Then years later, the multimillion dollar industry blew up the whole scene and has lasted well into the history of beach activities. But, the art...lasts in places all over the world.
