Incredible story, thanks to the guys who posted links and videos. Truly a one of a kind car, story, and innovator in the custom car world. Glad it’s at the Peterson museum for everyone to look at. Cars like this, the golden Sahara , kookie car etc really are treasures that need to be preserved and shared. crazy how this thing ended up a $500 buck beater on a car lot.
Great story. I was so excited when Pat Ganahl wrote in R&C that it was going to be restored. I couldn't wait for each issue to see what new had been done. My dad's first car was a '51 Merc in '57, so I have always wanted one. When I got mine there was no doubt that someday I would change it up into a Hirohata clone. I know, there are several so why....but the day will come, someday if I can ever stop driving it. LOL

I have always been amazed by the Hirohata Merc. It was so different. When i was involved with the Merc Gathering in Sacramento, i finally got to meet Jim and ask him to tell me how he came to own it. Great story. When I get home, i'll post the pics of the convertible version, Bill Hines built. Always wanted to see them next to each other. It's just as stunning.
