My ‘32 Ford with ‘41 axles and wheels compared to the wide 5 wheel The difference in offset is clearly visible The ‘41 backing plate I love the look but I don’t think it is going to work. I’m thinking about using the wide 5 rims/wheels on my ‘32 Ford. I currently using ‘41 Ford axles and wheels. Looking at the wide 5 setup I have, it appears that the hub offset is about an inch off. How are you guys making this setup fit on a ‘41 axles and brakes? What is the actual bolt pattern 5x10 1/2? What year wide 5 setup do I have?
Those maybe '36 only drums, i think that combination of parts will require a '37-8&9 brake drum. Lay the drum on a flat surface and measure thru the spindle hole to the flat surface, what is that dimension? Tom
So, the ‘36 drum/hub is different than the ‘37-‘39 drum/hub? Will the ‘37 & ‘38 drums work with my ‘41 backing plates even though they are not juice brakes? Is the ‘39 drum/hub the best and only one to use? How can I tell what year the drums are visually?
I’ll measure the drum offset tomorrow when I get back in the shop. Okay, I need 37-39 front drums to work with my 41 spindles and backing plates. But the rear 36 drums will work with my 41 banjo rear and backing plates?
Thanks everyone for the helpful information. Marty, did I sell you a Donavan gear drive for that 392 dragster many years ago? Oops, just checked and I sold the gear drive to 675AFD on here.
The good thing is, if your '36 front hubs and drums are in good shape, you won't have any trouble selling them since they're a one-year-only part and somebody will need them. Also, note that the wide 5 wheels come in two and possibly 3 different widths. The 4" width (wheel width is measured inside measurement between the flanges the tire seals against) is the most common, used on '36-'39 cars and pickups with 85 HP engine. There is a 3.5" version of this wheel that was used on '37-'39 Standard cars with the 60 HP engine. I have been told that there was a 4.5" wide version used on Lincoln Zephyr but I have never come across any. All that I have on hand and most that I have seen are the 4" version.
And then there's the 9N wheel....different bolt pattern but still wide-5. I tried a set of 16" car wheels and they were different.
9n's - 2n's and early 8n's all had the wide five.....then the later 8n's went to the now popular bolt pattern....
The differences between the ‘36 drum and the ‘39 drum is clear now. Thanks everyone for all the great history lesson.
Sorry but I missed it somewhere in there. In the picture above which one is the 36 and which one is the later thanks
