Despite the fact that those 2 cars would NEVER run against each other (even bracket racing), at least they were real drag cars...and not some Hollywood director's version of what drag cars should look like.;)

Not a lot, but I did get my buffing wheel out to make this shiny.

I've been working on the bed on my 49 Dodge truck for a couple of weeks. (pic, there will be a panel between the bumper and the tailgate that will house the tail lights and license plate). I really needed a break this weekend, but its been raining the last few days. Going for a ride in the coupe in the rain isn't as much fun as it is when the sun shines.

So, my son and I went to a small swap meet today. Just for the heck of it, we both through a few things into the back of my truck. It was a great day for an indoor swap at an old Chrysler Plymouth dealership. The guy that owns it now has a lot of old stuff inside, and there were 10-15 guys swapping including my son and I, but most of the stuff is not HAMB friendly.
Any way, I sold off some junk from my pile, and have increased the money available for the up coming body work on the 49. I'm ready to get back on the 49 tomorrow morning! Gene

Made some low budget gas tank anti-squeak pads. Used some roofing tar paper and glued the strips together with 3M weatherstrip adhesive . The last two were folded to cover the edges and the straps will cover that seam. It worked out real nice. studebaker build 010.JPG studebaker build 011.JPG studebaker build 012.JPG

April 12th 2021 Took almost thirty-five gallons to submerge the block. Had to monitor the operation closely as the heating element would have the water boiling if left alone. No switch or thermostat on it. The pump was more of an aquarium pump than a spa pump. I kept the heat between 130 and 140 degrees as I did not know how much heat the plastic tub could take. The water moved in a slow circular pattern without suds. When the nailhead was pulled from the dirty soup, it was blown dry with my electric weed blower and an air hose.

And then the wheels fell off. The hydraulic ram on the Carroll and Taylor engine hoist malfunctioned and quit working. I settled into Deep Ponder Mode to sort things out with the beer of the day,
Florida Beer Company's Sunshine State Amber Lager.

  9. Filled the gearbox and diff with SAE 90 and got the chance to use this huge ancient shifting spanner I restored last year. Don't know how old it is but looks really Art Deco to me. IMG_20210410_150511141.jpeg

Finally got my last coat of high build primer on my project. Weather improved enough to shoot it.

With the forecast this week for low 70's here, I'm planning on sanding the whole car in 500 grit, and hopefully shoot paint this week too!

Big job, installed a new horn in the Model A pickup. :D

Years ago I picked up a $5 plastic horn at a swap meet and installed that, and I've caught nothing but grief from my wife, my kids, even my friends, it sounds so bad it's funny. Last Friday I was surfing Craigslist and saw a nice vintage horn for sale locally for $40, and I jumped on it. I was the first local guy to respond. I went over on Saturday and picked it up. Sunday I fabricated the new mount, because that cheap bracket I used to mount the plastic horn wasn't going to cut it with this new one. Then I disassembled it, cleaned up and painted the motor to match the car, then I polished the horn and clear coated it. The first paint job turned out like crap, the paint wrinkled on both the motor and the mount bracket, so yesterday I had to sand them both back down and respray them, and the 2nd time came out OK. This evening after I work I put them together and mounted them. It turned out rather nice I think. 20210413_182736.jpg 20210413_183912.jpg 20210413_184018.jpg

It sounds like it's supposed to now. Aaaahhhoooooooogggaaaaaa! :D

  16. Not my car, but my brothers again...but sanded the sides and am buffing it before taking it to him this weekend. The paint job that Mike Howell put on it several years ago now still looks great but had shrunk some. A quick sand and buff is making a big difference in shine and reflection.

This evening I reconnected the trans cooler lines in the pickup. I had to reroute the lines due to the new horn I posted about yesterday, the lines were running where the horn went; so I had to re-route the lines along the frame. Had to make a trip to Autozone for some 5/16" hose, and that was an experience, the poor kid that helped me was obviously new and had not been trained on this kind of deal at all. He had no clue what I was asking for, I had to walk back behind the counter to show him the spools of hose. Then when I told him I wanted 3 feet of it, he thought I had to buy the whole spool. He had to get help from two other guys to figure out how to measure and cut 3 feet of hose and how to price it. Wow. Anyway, I got that all done, but by the time I got it buttoned up I was being called in for dinner, then had a meeting after that to attend, so I never got a chance to fire it up and make sure I have no leaks. I get to that tomorrow.

April 15th 2021 Short detour to repair the engine hoist. Searched the intarweb with the hydraulic ram name plate info and found it to be a common item so, I ordered a replacement that most closely matched the same specs and crossed my fingers. The price was low enough that it didn't make sense for me to stop my barely noticeable momentum to try to repair the old ram at this time.

The new ram works and it almost fits, like all things chicom. Needs a little drillin' of the base pivot and grinding on the pivot bracket and we should be good to go. Background music was Country Joe and the Fish, Electric Music for the Mind and Body.

  21. Finished getting the car ready for the road trip to St. Louis Saturday, but kinda bummed. The water pump went out and I can’t get a replacement locally, so have to take it on a stretcher... Oh well, honk if you see me headed up I-44 hauling it... I’ll also be heading back Sunday hauling a 54 Chevy 2-door hardtop that my brother sold to a guy in Oklahoma.

Started in on going through the brake system of the 1954 Hudson Hornet I bought a couple weeks ago. Promptly found a “jelly substance” in the master cylinder, looks to be a chemical contamination.
The wheel is my make shift step ladder to get at the master cylinder.... and naturally it’s from my wife’s car!

  28. Well, ran a marathon over the weekend to swap cars with my brother from Detroit. Made it to St. Louis and back hauling cars both ways and got to hang out with my brother, one of my best friends in St. Louis, and a few others along the way. Even got to meet a HAMBer that I had never met in person before @56longroof. Great trip considering having to deal with stretchers and not just driving the cars.

Did my first home paint job, and now I'm spending a little time every day wet sanding and buffing. Ugh!

Spent yesterday cleaning up the overspray that worked it's way under the car and settled on frame, and suspension. Then repainting the frame, springs, etc. that wouldn't come clean with reducer, or thinner.
Looks like I've got weeks of sanding and buffing ahead at my pace!

Looks good! I painted my last vehicle in pieces to prevent the overspray but assembling it is a pitb....regards, Randy
