'32 Ford Rear Spreader Bar Diameter?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Harrison, Nov 4, 2009.

  1. I need to knock out a rear spreader bar for the RPU this weekend. Anyone know the diameter of a stock rear bar?

    TIA, Jim

Front and rear are different :D

    My front measures 1.488 ( original )
The rear measures 1.988 ( orignal also but for a luggage rack )

Make yours ( width wise ) to fit your frame ... repros are ALWAYS too short

  3. Thanks Randy. I knew you could help. ;)

I'd suspect that would have been 2" and 1-1/2" in the front or was Henry scrimping on the size to save money?

  5. I don't know what it was, but I'm sure there was a reason.

... & I bet Randy has an idea what it was.

    ... or Bruce Lancaster.

Mine are only 12 thousands smaller than 2" and 1-1/2" :D
    Not unusual :D

Original width bars will not fit a repro chassis. They are too wide to fit. Every repro chassis I ever measured was more narrow than the Ford specifications. That's so the fiberglass ... bodies can slip down over the frames. :(

  10. Hi. I’ve an issue with my rear spreader bar.
Did it myself with a tube with an o.d. of little bit less than 2’’.
The bar touch the gas tank (repo from Tanks inc.).
No rubber under the tank for the mock up.
Do someone have the same problem ?

Yep, there is very little gap between the spreader bar and tank. - can only just slide a piece of paper between.
Possibly offset the bar a few millimeters if possible. - ( may be the reason why some street rodders use the one bolt into centre of spreader bar and move it rear ward a little more).
Obviously not an issue on original cars, as they had curved spare wheel holders, - not spreader bars.
