    Hello,

In one of our long road trips up the coastline through Big Sur and the rugged cliffside drives, we ended up in San Francisco. Ever since my mom raised her voice one day and said she did not know this little boy in front of her. Then the question came out of the blue: “Who are you?” “Where are you from, anyway?” (she was mad) My quick answer off of the top of my head was: “I am George from San Francisco.”

Our family had been in San Francisco for a long summer vacation back in the 1949 Buick Roadmaster days. I must have been 5 or 6. San Francisco has always left me in awe, whether at age 5, 25, or 45, even 75. So, memories must have clouded my teeny brain at age 5. But since then, I was known in our family as “GEORGE from San Francisco.”

Many years later, I still used “George” as a name for restaurant reservations, back when we could all go out to a nice restaurant without any worries of not coming back.

In 1966-67, my wife (then girlfriend) and I went on those long drives together ending up at the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco. Those old aquariums always had a big effect on me since the Marineland of The Pacific days in So Cal. But, since there was limited parking space in front of the old SF aquarium building, this photo was taken with my then NEW Asahi Pentax 35mm film camera, just around the corner. The building behind the El Camino was part of the aquarium complex. So, technically, it was in front of the Steinhart Aquarium building complex.

"If you're going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you're going to San Francisco
You're gonna meet some gentle people there..."

An old pic... but pretty sure it still counts. In front of (ok... actually behind) the most famous and largest model airplane ever built. Aka the Hercules, aka the Spruce Goose

I wish I could say that I had friends in high places... but this was simply a case of being in the right place at the right time. Was with a group of speedster guys, and we were talkin with a docent about the Ford Tri Motor that was just out of frame. One thing led to another, and he offered to let us push our cars in to take pics in front of the Tri Motor... just so happens we were able to point the camera the other way and snap this one
