Starting on a new steering wheel for the 51. Spent the day doing layout for drilling the hub piece. The reduced size rim has been rolled. After the hub is done, I will work on spokes.





Style is of the 1953 Buick.

 

Yep, perfect weather for a drive. We ended up putting about 700 miles on the 56 and T-bird over the weekend. Great time with lots of great friends too. Happy Easter to you too!

 

Put some 35 year old NOS Simpson belts in my pile...not very exciting, I know.

 

Eliminated the lower trim on the driver's side of my 66 300. Now on to the 24 holes on the passenger side.

 

Looks like the boss is putting her foot down and saying don't forget about me. Lol

 

Mounted my new 4"X15" ET front wheels on a pair of 5.60 skinny radials and swapped 'em out for the fat 14" wheels/tires that were on the car. Took it for a drive to see if I needed any front wheel balancing. Nope, they're perfect with absolutely no wheel weights !!!!! Drove it past Tdog's place and showed him... he liked them but they show even more of my rotors and calipers. drove it home and completely blew off any work on my new Muncie transmission but I did fire up my new 50 Pontiac coupe project..still has a miss. Gotta do some weed and feed on my yard tomorrow.

Sometimes it is so repetitive ! after looking at a whole lot of gas tanks, and coming up with one to fit my application ( tank is a 65 Chevy II ) you can get the pick up with a 5/16 or 3/8 line. The bottom straps are for the Chevy II the top ones are homemade. The best part it is all done.

 

The headlight rings and shock mounts came back from the chrome shop so yesterday I completed the switch from big stock type headlights on a stock bar to smaller hot rod lights on a dropped bar. Part of the ongoing attempt to de-Resto Rod my Model A. I also rewired the front harness to lose a bunch of tacky splices and upgrade the grounds. I removed the stainless conduit and replaced it with black Ford braid that I trimmed from the '36 taillight changeover. Here's the before and after.

 

With the headlight task complete I had to address the spinning ignition switch in the Model A. I guess it's a '64-'65 Olds ignition switch with a '55-'56 Chevy bezel and nut but it's made to fit into a double D hole, my wooden dash has a round hole. I really like the switch but it's all round and smooth. Tighten the nut and a few days later it's spinning in the hole again. I found a 1/8" thick brass washer in my junk, drilled and tapped two holes to 4-40 and put a couple sharpened pieces of a 4-40 screw in the holes. Using a drill I put two divots in the front of the switch housing for the pins to index with. The other end of the pins will bite into the back of my wooden dash. I put it together and no more spinning switch. It's sorta temporary since I really would like to redo the dash with old SW gauges in a steel dash (I'm not a wooden dash guy) but I have to admit, it's growing on me the more I drive it. The finish is well done and reminds me of the finish on an old Les Paul guitar I used to have. If it ain't broke........
(That's not the car's ignition switch, it's just a spare one I used to fit check everything so I wouldn't have to keep climbing in and out of the car.)

 

Got the window channel welded up and the door all put back together on my brothers Buick this evening. Next is to sand and buff it some and raise the front up a little bit to get just a little more ground clearance for the crossmember before the trip up to Michigan in a little over a week.

April 8th 2021 Started setting up a DIY hot tank for the engine cleaning. Cleaned a plastic trash can the landlord's contractor left behind when he absconded with my fourteen foot step ladder. Found a hole in the bottom which was probably the reason he left it. Ordered one off the intarweb.

Filled it with water and lowered the nailhead block into it. Placed a submersible spa pump for circulation and a submersible heating element, digital thermometer and a small amount of Dawn dishwashing soap and watched a bit to see that the suds didn't get out of control. Background music was Stone Free, A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix.

 

Put some loc-tight on the threads of that oil filter nipple to be sure it stays in the adapter.

 

Been working on stretching the hood on the coupe. Will have to update my build thread with additional photos

Took my roadster out 25 miles with a fresh engine back for an oil change and put another 50 miles on it.

Gave the old truck a bit of a clean up, taking the little lady out for Mexican Dinner tonite.

 

Yea, more color finally, a little more work and I can reassemble for the summer, next stage is next winter.

 

Built A Oak tool Box For The El Camino...

 

Raised the front up on this about an inch and had to go drive it to see if the crossmember has enough ground clearance to drive. Much better now and about ready for the trip to Detroit next weekend.

 

Did this today... finally the '31 A project is under way. Now to strip all the little brackets and etc. out of the back end of the body so I can get rid of that mess and start on the frame. Sorry about the wheels... they will go away before it goes back on the road.

 

My grandson came over and we tackled scraping and cleaning up the rest of the floor boards on the 56 so we could have a clean surface to lay dynamat and the new carpet. Also cleaned and scraped the windshield channel so next weekend we can drop the new gasket and windshield frame back on the body.
Got the seats back from the upholstery guy so we will be ready to get the interior back together.

 

I spent a couple of hours laying in the floorboard of the wagon with my head under the dash.

I have been procrastinating for several years with repairing the windshield wipers that quit in a blinding storm coming home from Knoxville, Tennessee and have been relying on Rain-X ever since.

We never give any consideration to how difficult making a repair will be in the future when we are running wire, fuse panels, radios, switches & cables, not to mention air conditioning and hoses.

Add to the fact the wiper motor is very close to the windshield and due to the accident I had a few years ago my range of motion in my right arm is not quite what it was before the accident so I did most of the work left handed, but I managed to get it repaired, this time I used some lock-tite on the set screws, the main problem was that darn double loop spring. HRP

It was a PITA but it's the kind of accomplishment that makes you feel like you did something, I would imagine my back will know I did something when I get up in the morning!

 

Looks good Rusty! A beige interior is my favorite for the early corvette!

Took off some braces and brushed some teeth. The braces (grill guard) was ugly, but sure protected the nice grill.
