    I'm starting a 12v conversion on my '53 Coronet.

It was my intention to use the original 6v starter, but I have a question concerning wiring.

This starter only has a heavy battery cable connection. My new starter relay has a "sol" connection point which would normally go to the starter. Do I need an external solenoid?

And are there any aftermarket starters that fit the 241?

I'm a little confused, you say you are going to use the original starter, but also have a new one? A picture of the "new" starter would help.

I have a new starter relay. I'm wiring the car up similar to an early 70s mopar.

Old Chrysler products used a starter relay but it was set up a little different from a Ford. You could get a 12v Dodge relay, or use the sol connection to bypass the ballast resistor for starting.

It's the stock trans and flywheel. I think 146 tooth and 3 speed stick.

If the engine starts quickly then the 6v starter will be ok with 12v. If it is hard starting then the starter will over heat and soon die.

Yes, I understand this. At this point I just want to run the old starter until it fails. Then go through the painful process of adapting a modern starter to fit.

I'm currently trying to get the starting circuit wired up.

IIRC there is a 'new' 12 volt starter available from Promaster as a direct replacement.
