First of all, i know theres a lot of treads about this issue but here goes:

    Full Fendered early 28 tudor.
Gonna run juice brakes, 600-16 tires.
Should i go for 46 inch or 47?
Here in Norway most people normaly run super bell and the concensus when running fenders is 46 but I have been looking at the Socal forged 47 Axle also.
    Help!

600 tires are big under a 28 fender.

Maybe you are right. But a lot of cars i love run 600-16 and 750-16 combo.

I think i asked about axles.
Theres a lot of cars running that combo that i love. Theres a bedlam coupe that runs that combo but hey, i havent tought about 28/29 and 30/31 fender differences as most of the cars i have seen with that combo is later model a’s. But ofcourse i have wheel options.
Im just wondering about the right Axle.

  6. With a 600-16 tire and fenders if it were me I would go with the 46" axle. HRP

46" centers it up in the fenders. That also gets you to the highest crown of the fender, which would help with the bigger tire.

Sid is a great reference for dropped axles. He will guide you through your decision.

I'm running the SoCal 47inch on my 28 with fenders but my tires aren't as tall as a 6.00X16 will be.

All the customer chassis I build and have built, highboy or full fendered use the 47 inch So-Cal axle since they came out which is quite a few chassis and I have had no customer complaints to date.

Theres something in me that says socal is better because its forged. Super bell is cast.
Here in Norway it has to be bought, a known brand. A Dropped orginal wont go tru the dmw. At least thats what they say.

Thank you. Pete and Jakes offers a forged axle now. I believe they bought the equipment when Chassis Engineering went out.

The disk brakes probably moves the wheel out a bit also. Im going with drums. Maybe they end up about the same.
What have you done in the back? im thinkin T spring on my car.

I've sold 100's of Super Bell axles over the last 40 years but went to So-Cal because they're forged and because of the turning radius being better If you decide to go with discs I use a setup that does not move the wheel out.

Pluss the socal ones looks cool. And one inch difference cant be all that. And i even think the socal ones are a bit cheaper. Go figure.

  21. I can measure mine when I get home if you want. I’m using a dropped ‘36 axle, drum brake and full fenders on my ‘28 Tudor. Plus I’m using a T rear spring, it’s still in the works but you can see the thread in my signature.

That’s a total bummer about not being able to use a stock lowered axle.

    Yeah, please do that. Thanks

  23. Mine looks to be a little over 48" (eye ball with shocks in the way). According to Sids site the '35/'36 4" drop is 48 1/2" and the stock A axle is 50 1/2". The SoCal site says the 46" has a narrow perch span (34"), so a special spring is needed. I would think that the 46"/47" are for wider front tires and I want the skinny (I have 6.00 now or 5.50 in the future) to be close to centered. Right now it's 6.00 x 16 front tires with '35 wires and 40's drum brakes, soon to be 6.00 x 16 steelies with F100 drum brakes.

    Thanks! Really helpfull!
Do you by any chance have a side pic? With it on the ground with the 600-16 wheels

  25. I don't have a side shot of it, but I can tell you that I did turn it lock to lock and it didn't hit with the EAO 2.0 in it. Also mine isn't that low yet, I'm running 7 leaves and a stock main....the fender lip is about 1" above the top of the tire. I'm going to wait until I get the new drivetrain in it before I decide to reverse the eyes or not.

I can clamp down the fender and get a side shot for you later this week if that will help, but there's no drivetrain weight on it.

  27. Dropped A axle @ 49", F-1 brakes, and 15" F-100 wheels. Tires are shorter than the 6.00 you are wanting; but these sit just right and not tucked in too much under the fender from a side view.

Not usually a steering clearance problem with A fenders like you can get with too wide an axle/tall tires like on '33 and later.

Don't know if this will help. Mine is a '28 with what measures out at a 48" axle, 7 leaf reversed eye spring, stock front crossmember, and 5.50-15 Firestones on Wheel Vintiques 15x5" (3" B.S.). It has Speedway brakes that I think kick it out 3/4" per side. The tires rub the fenders a little on a tight turn but not bad enough to bother with.
