    hello,
it is just semantics: look at how drag news classified the leffler coupe: upload_2016-7-14_8-11-59.png
no classification for fuel altered coupe... there is a class for gas altered coupes, though... upload_2016-7-14_9-1-30.png
so, whether or not the leffler bros coupe was labeled altered or modified, it was fast, a record holder, and impressive. maybe today's standard class if comp coupe...potatoes...

    thanks,
    jnaki

In those days. The dark ages when I ran an Altered coupe. Altered coupe was a gas class. The fuel equivalent was, strangely enough, Fuel coupe. Comp coupe was a fuel only class. As you can clearly see, Alt was a pretty stock body mounted in a conventional manner relative to the frame. Comp coupe was a dragster in disguise. Roadsters had there own classes. When NHRA lumped roadsters in with Altereds I decided I would rather do land speed. They still know how to tell an Alt from a roadster.

  4. Yep coupes like the Leffler Coupe ran Comp Coupe.

I remember when I was little, too little to race except to the bathroom, an old told me to build one cheap you bought someone's used up digger and strapped a body on it. :D

Anyway this is still alive. Maybe someone else has an altered that we haven't seen today.

Altered - driver sits in front of the rear axle, Competition Coupe - driver sits behind the rear axle.

  7. Hey Beaner, can I play too?
Besides the usual (554, 15 oz, Pure Hell, etc.), here are a few I like:

    Hello,

Here is another beautiful, red chopped Ford coupe that ran in A/Fuel class at Riverside in 1958. Sorry, no racing pics or movie clips. One of the few coupes that ran spoke wheels in front. It was well built and had that mean look.

    Hello,
Updated the video of the mystery red chopped coupe from Riverside in 1959. Thanks to Dean Lowe and Ryan... Now my list of missing race car owners/drivers has gotten smaller and smaller. This red chopped Ford was run by Jim Miles. Riverside on the trailer and Bakersfield in eliminations. Good times and thanks for the info...

That's a scary looking front suspension starting with the lowered hairpin bracket off the frame; that 426 Hemi would also add to the adrenaline rush!
