upload_2021-3-23_4-17-30.png This 4 door 1937 Chevy sedan was an exact look and copy of my brother’s friend’s car.

    Hello,

It takes all kinds of old cars to be daily drivers as teenagers. Back in 1958-59, my brother’s friends already had their group of teenage cars. Some were fast, and some were dual purpose daily drivers and weekend racers at Lion’s Dragstrip. That place was only a few miles away from most of us and it drew teenagers from all over So Cal to see the action.

When the top two cars in my brother’s group went to Lions, it was more exciting to see them in action. Pop off the hubcaps, open the exhaust down tube openings and it was the sounds of drag racing at its best. Among the colorful cars racing, anytime a black on black, on black, car raced, was one for the books. A good hot rod base and cruiser rolled into those teenage history events.

For some reason, I never saw or filmed my brother’s 51 Oldsmobile sedan racing at Lions. Although he did step on the gas pedal a couple of times on the empty, Terminal Island Freeway near our house. That was an exciting couple of full throttle runs.

Out of all of the hot rods and sedans in the teenage group, this 1937 Chevy sedan had several things going for it. First, it was all black, black on black, on black. The interior was a smooth, fuzzy upholstery that was nice to the touch and was in great shape. The last cool thing was the rear suicide doors that welcomed the rear passengers with some fancy entry. The only other hot rod was the 1934 Ford 5 window coupe that also had a suicide door situation.

The 37 four door sedan was a great running sedan and not much was done to it to make it go faster or look like a custom car. We are talking teenagers growing up in 1957-60 in So Cal. Jobs and money were two things most needed to buy a car, let alone have gas money and extras for the weekend activities. Most could not have either, unless you had a $$$$$ pipeline coming into your pockets weekly. So, black rims, small hubcaps and a nice interior made it a nice local cruiser.

Besides being completely stock, that Chevy sedan was rather cool and reliable. I was able to get a ride in it several times. Driving in the sedan reminded me of being in a gangster movie, that was popular in those time periods of B/W small screen TV programming.

The claim to fame for this stock 37 Chevy sedan was that it was the older brother to the fast 37 Chevy Coupe of Doug Cook that we saw at Lion’s Dragstrip almost weekly. When that 37 Chevy coupe came to the line, the owner of the 37 sedan was a proud relative. It was mentioned many times at how cool of a coupe/model that Tahitian Red color of Doug Cook’s Coupe was in the eliminations. But, there was always a teenager in the stands that had one more inch of admiration for all 1937 Chevy coupes or sedans.

I always liked the styling of the 37 Chevy coup . A growing up friends brother had one with a 283 small block and once in awhile he would give him a ride to school and he was the envy of all the kids in our class.

Thanks. I bought it as a basket case 40 years ago. It's been on the road since '84 always with an SBC/auto. I just converted it to a 4 speed and put some 4.11's with a Truetrac in the rear. This to go along with a dynoed 350+hp 327. It's a lot more fun to drive now!
