I am converting my 1951 Pontiac Chieftain to power brakes. I received My front disc brake kit. Fat man drop spindles and springs. I need to find a power master cylinder that will fit my car. A friend mentioned that an aftermarket 53 power booster may fit. Thanks in advance.

Has anyone done this type of conversion? I'm not 100% positive, but the 51 Cadillac manual master cylinder appears to be the same.

  3. Sorry I won't be much help. I'm running Fat man drop spindles on my 1950 Pontiac. Where did you get your disc brake setup?

  4. Master is under the floor and mounts to the frame rail, not like the Chevy one that bolts vertically to a crossmember. It's harder to adapt one to a booster because of that; a hydroboost would probably be easier.

The other choice would be to change it to a hanging brake pedal and just put the works on the firewall. That makes the fabrication easier, as well as bleeding, maintenance, and so forth, but it requires moving the defroster unit from the left side of the firewall.

Interested in how the caliper mounts work out with the Fatman dropped uprights.

Tony check out a radiator for a 47-54 Chevy truck. I bought an aluminum one to fit these trucks for my 51 Pontiac and it fit great. Just had to make some simple brackets to adapt from the slanted mounting brackets on the radiator for the trucks.

Even the drain plug lines up with the relief in the factory core support.

Curious to know if Tom's Classics on ebay is the same as Scarebird?

I used a 7" single booster on the frame rail under the front floor on my wagon. I had to put a blister hatch to access the master. I used a frame mount kit i think from cpp. Stops but not like a modern car. Ive got a dual 7" booster ive yet to install to try and get better stopping power. I think a larger booster would definitely be the way to go if possible based on my limited experience.

Adapt the top-swing pedal stuff for Chevy's, from Walton Fabrications.

  16. Well, or save a few bucks and just go pick something in the junkyard and take the swing pedal out of it. G-van is a good one, you can brace it to the dash rail with rods or whatever stock. 97-newer ones the pedal has an angle to it, but you could probably use the hanger and swap it out.

Depends on your fab skills. 95% of the way there, or 50%. Your choice.

I was looking at the frame today. I'm debating at all the cutting I will have to do. I don't cut corners

Scarebird makes a good kit. I fabricated a power boosted setup under the floorboard. I reccomend mounting it on the firewall to prevent moisture seepage.

We have a new setup now that will clear the stock drum rims.
