Event Coverage 1st Street Rod Nationals - 1970

I had a bunch of pictures that the wife and I took at the first Street Rod Nationals in Peoria, IL in 1970, so I decided to post them in a slideshow on YouTube.



My first try at this so don't expect a professional production. I just wanted to get them out there for people to enjoy.

Thanks for all the pictures. Hard to believe that was 51 years ago, damn I am getting old

 

I had almost forgotten how many T-buckets there were back then. You have to wonder where they all are these days.

 

My then 11 year old self would have thought I'd died and went to hot rod heaven! These are the styles that molded my ideas . Lots of shiny chrome, and not a faded out rusty paint job in the bunch!

 

Great job! Good music too. Thanks for the trip back in time.

Thanks for sharing, very few trailered cars if any back then. My friend Lacey Hunt drove his 33 Chevy sedan there and back from Huntington LI. NY. Those were the days.

Thanks for the photos. I grew up about 30 miles west, in Canton ILL. I remember seeing some of the cars when they were out cruising the nearby countryside.....Would have been 7 years old at that time.

Was a Junior in high school during this time.
Long hair, hot pants and psychedelics.
Yep the t buckets were more popular than the coupes.
To be young again.

Great job!!!----Yep, the T buckets were in abundance then, bet all those wide front tires went by the wayside after traveling cross country back then. We saw many of these again at 1972 Nats when I made my first cross country trip with Bud Bryan & Tom (Stroker") Medley to Detroit.

I still have the November 1970 Rod & Custom magazine that covered the first Street Rod Nationals. I was 14 years old and thought I had died and gone to heaven!

Glad everyone is enjoying them. For some reason we never took a picture of what the wife and I drove down there. It is a '27 Ford Roadster pickup with a 265 Small block and a Powerglide transmission.

My friend John mounted this on the front of his 1932 5 window coupe to commemorate the 50 year anniversary, he also added the original dash plaque he got when he registered the same '32 that he drive to this very day, the car was red at that time. HRP

 

1934 Coupe, WOW, Lacy Hunt had an upholstery shop in Bayville L.I and did most of the custom interiors in the area. I welded the exhaust manifolds for his "T" touring car. I can't remember if it was the late '60s or early '70s. I don't know if Lacy is still with us, but I know his brother is still around.

 

Everyone was so young (and thin)!

I was a high school freshman that year and these cars had a big influence on me. I still love the look of square edged bias ply tires on slotted aluminums.

I remember seeing some of those cars in Rod & Custom and Hot Rod and dreaming about someday owning one. Those dreams came true but not until the mid 80's after a bunch of muscles cars, Corvettes, and other stuff. Sure wish I had been able to experience those early Nationals.

My old friend Tony Phillips attended the first Street Rod Nationals and everyone since, sadly Tony Passed away a couple of weeks ago. HRP

And yeah - there didn’t seem to be a lot of old guys involved back then - We just started showing up in bigger numbers as the years rolled on.
