Took this thing out....steam cleaned it and found out it actually is blue instead of textured black from oil and road dirt.... 20210318_221940.jpg

Then took these things out..... 20210318_222056.jpg

And removed this heavy thing 20210313_145454.jpg

So I could have a look at this 20210313_145517.jpg

    More to come....

  3. It’s been a couple days ago now, but I took my car to pick up a familiar car that my younger brother just bought. I waited on him to tell the world before I spilled the beans. Anyway, he has become the caretaker of a familiar 61 Invicta the many on here will recognize. And, man is it kool! All that had a hand in building this car are well respected here on the HAMB. Still can’t believe Bob sold it, but I know my brother is sure excited to be it’s new caretaker.

Posted this yesterday: The next enormous hurdle to mount and defeat is of course knowing that they fixed the tranny right this time and it will not break down on me again. If that happens there's going to be a 1934 Ford for sale with a broken trans FOR SALE in the Seattle/Tacoma area of Washington ....................seriously.

I'm not going to jinx myself by saying everything worked out but will say after a bit of a scare with it not wanting to move with the 4-1/2 qts in it for initial startup, after adding two more qts. and letting it sit at idle for a few minuets it seemed, I say it seemed, ((pay attention foghorn,........... I say pay attention!!)), to be as it should be. It takes 9 qts. and that was with only 7 that I put in. I was satisfied with that for the day. I fix our dinner because of Wife's dementia and was late at that time so had to come in to do that.
I'll get out today and check the stick and see if maybe the shop put a couple of qts. in with out telling me and if not see if it will take two more.

  5. ...finally the snow & ice melted away so I got my 47 pickup out for a drive after being locked in for 3-4 moths,..beautiful day yesterday.

Had a local driveshaft shop make me a new driveshaft 3" longer so I can install my O/D 4 speed i just finished rebuilding. Of course had to give it a little paint. 20210320_194634.jpg

Also played around with a lathe to resurface and drill my flywheel to accept a 11" clutch and diaphram pressure plate to replace the Ford long style for a nice easy pedal. 20210320_194731.jpg

As Ray Stevens put it, "Its me again Martha". Yesterday was a total bust, nothing accomplished.
The night before though the final two qts. of ATF were added. I found out also that the new horns installed will have to be trimmed on the outside edges to get the splash aprons on. I also scrounged up the missing and matching socket pan head 1/4-20 bolt needed to mount those aprons which in turn places the grill correctly.
    That's all and I'm out.

Decided it was time to do the nasty job I had been putting off. Removed the factory inner roof insulation and adhesive from my '53 Ford. What a nasty job, insulation and black dust over everything. At least it's done now and I can start to install an actual interior.

Took it for a short drive after I got both me and the car cleaned up. Made me feel much better.

Finally got around to replacing the old rusty Smitty mufflers with new Porters stainless. They look great and sound great. Threw on some stainless V8 embossed deflectors while I was at it.

My wife and I took the 48 Plymouth coupe out for a ride to get some ice cream this afternoon. A really nice 140 mile ride! A bit windy, but the sun was shining, it was a nice day for a short road trip. Gene

March 22nd 2021 Continued the nailhead block cleaning operations. Used a ball hone on a drill motor to refresh the cylinder bores and get the 45 degree cross-hatch. Marvel Mystery Oil provided lubrication.

Did a final pass of the machined surfaces with a 320 grit drum in the SCT tool. Cleaned the cylinders, lifter bores and oil passages with nylon bottle brushes, Oileater and Hoppes number 9 passes.

Chased all the bolt holes with thread straightener taps after cleaning with telescoping magnet and compressed air passes. The block is now ready for its hot soapy water cleaning. Background music was Eddie Cochran and Friends One minute to one, Vol II.

I jacked up the back of my Falcon and parked on ramps today to get a look at the underside of the car, it wasn't encouraging. I've owned the car for 13 years and haven't had a real issues beyond a new radiator gas tank and some front suspension stuff, I may have spent $1,000.00 in those 13 years beside gas, oil etc. We've gotten enough enjoyment out of the car so I can't really complain.

My goal was to start getting an idea of what might be needed to bring the car up to snuff, it looks ok from a distance, but I'm beginning to think that might be a bit deceptive.

To start it looks like some PO put new lower quarters on the car and hung them with pop rivets hidden behind the side trim. A little bit of obvious rust here and there in other spots. I may be sorry I looked. :)

Larry, very sorry to hear about your wife's dementia. That has to be very tough for her and for you also. Good luck to both of you.

trying to get B&M Unimatic Shifter to work right with my '63 Nova SS that has 350/350 set up - PO installed the shifter and was not set up according to instructions, yes some of us do use them, - can not get rod to align with front hole in bracket for gears - which will 20210320_170452.jpg not allow the Neutral Safety Switch to work - anyone else using one of this on your ride? - any info/pics appreciated

March 25th 2021 Need to free up the engine hoist by getting the 302 Jimmy to a better storage location than on its side in the middle of the floor. It's current position is a good one for access to the clutch, however, so I decided to try to extract the clutch before moving the engine. I want to find out if the Hays clutch will fit the nailhead flywheel and Trans-Dapt HC-25 Adapter bellhousing.

Turned out to be easier than I anticipated. It was out and on the workbench in about fifteen minutes. The Hays 11" Street/Strip pressure plate mounting circle pattern is about 1/4" too big and the flywheel will have to be re-drilled if I use the Hays clutch. It looks like it will work but drilling a flywheel is beyond my experience and I need some Deep Ponder Mode musing on this.

Good news is that the Jimmy's ball pivot for the throw-out bearing fork is a direct bolt-in for the Trans-Dapt bellhousing. Beer of the day was Wooden Cask Brewing Company's The Scotchman Scotch Ale.

Discovered a little issue with the bottom end from the PO be build. 20210325_214722.jpg

Thankfully the crank looks good. 20210325_214821.jpg

Going to do some measuring, cleaning, and hopefully just a set of bearings will solve it.

  30. Cussed it, rubbed on it, cussed it some more, started it, smiled at it, then fixed the gas gauge. All the gas is running out of the float! Need some stop leak! 20210326_171256.jpg
