Technical ?? What Ford Car in 60’s came factory on 15’s??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by aRustyPatina, Mar 19, 2021.

  1. Looking to go bigger, but stock 5 x 4.5 for
    my ‘58 Ranchero.
Hoping my stock, large format, ‘57 caps will still mount securely to the 15’s.
    Thanks for your info.
    W.

  2. Maybe go backwards to 55 or 56 before they went to 14’s? I know that isn't really answering your question about the 60's, but are wheels that I suspect you could make work.

Possible that station wagons and police spec cars had a 15" option? It would have thrown speedometer off on "normal" cars but police cars were supposed to have calibrated ones.

When did they start offering disc brakes? That is when they went back to 15s.

1957 was when Ford went to 14” wheels.. before that, 15” was standard, and even earlier 16”, but you know that.

After the 1957 switch to 14”, a 15” wheel was still an option for police and taxi use. And was standard with the hipo 406 and 427 cars. And, I think the solid lifter 60-61 390.

Starting in 1965, Ford went back to 15” wheels as standard on all full sized cars. Disc brakes became common in the 66-67 time period, and sometime after that the center hole was enlarged to accommodate a bigger hub. The bolt pattern remained the same. I know that 65 wheels won’t hit a 69 axle pilot, but 69 wheel fits a 65 Galaxie. A 56 15” wheel fit that same 65.

In the muscle car era many Mustangs and Torino cars had a 15” option with wide oval type tires.

Mopar shared the Ford bolt pattern back then.

But I know on my 64 plymouth front hubs, a ford wheel center is too small even though the bolt pattern is the same. Lippy

I doubt this will happen...assuming that by "large format" you mean "full wheel covers"

One of the problems I've found using 60 year old steel wheels are the holes for the lug nuts get so worn from hammering them on with an impact gun is the holes get wallowed out and won't seat. The lug nut will bottom out on the drum/ disc hub. Not to mention bent from whacking curbs and so on.

Your full wheel covers also wont work from 14 to 15 inch wheels, but the small dog dish caps do fit.

  11. Great detail info!! Much appreciated!

If you are trying to use 14 inch full wheel covers on a 15 inch wheel it can be done by using the 14's and pop riveting them to a 15 inch trim ring, been done many times...and yes you have to get creative with the rivet placement....

The later disc brake compatible Ford wheel with the larger center hole probably fits your Plymouth

When I was growing up we had a 67 Custom 500 that the old man bought new, it had 15" tires. He took the tires when they got worn out and had them recapped and used them on his 71 Chevy pickup.

  16. My '65 Galaxie had 15s on it as did my '64 Merc Turn Pike Cruiser. I have an acquaintance that has a 4 door taxi that has 15s as well. I want to say that it is a '67 or a '68.

14s were common and in demand in the '60s but 15s were used on bigger vehicles and utility vehicles.

62 Ford Galaxie - 406 came with 15's, pretty rare stuff these days.

  19. Late 60's 15 inch disc brake wheels are very rare and expensive if you find them. Came on Galaxies and T birds. Center hole is larger and the area between the bolt circle and rim is shaped different to clear the calipers.

My 15s are police and are 7-inch. I've been told that Mustangs with big engine option but without alloy wheels (which most got) also got these rims. They had deep and wide trim rings which almost touch the hubcap. I found a set NOS. I have 14s on the front from a Maverick Grabber which also had a very wide trim ring which I was also able to find. So my front and rear look the same but one is 14, the other is 15.

My 64 Mercury Marauder has factory 15 inch wheels and full wheel covers. My 72 Galaxie has same exact wheels. Ford and Mercury Full and intermidite models like Torino's Cougars , T birds, Ranchero's till 78 had the same wheels. But the LTD 2 and Ford Elites With the squad car package had 5 on 5 bolt patterns like Chevy truck, Pontiac and Buick. Larry

  23. Yep Lippy the Mopar's do have a bigger center - a must for the early cars back in the 50's as well.

  24. You could try Studebakers and Ramblers - might be narrow wheels like 5" wide.

I'm not sure what you mean by "large formant" but The only issue with putting a 57 15 inch Ford hubcap on a later Ford rim is going to be if the offset doesn't allow it. Meaning it ether goes on and seats down right or it doesn't go on because the center is out too far.

Not sure where you got the "large format" BS but we only go by full size or small/poverty/'dog dish around here.

  29. Anthony you remember what year model the studebaker was?

  30. Mid 50s.
I took a set of 54 stude wheels home from work. They fit the rotors on a ride I was messing with.
