Projects T10 in a 57 Ranchero

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ottoparts, Mar 13, 2021.

  1. This T10 is available to me. I'm having a hard time with the tag number. I see 4A3-N-1(or I). The case still shows in yellow paint "C4AR" which I break down to C4 = 1964, A = full size, R = ?
The input shaft snout is thicker than the Mustang t10 and shorter.
With the large dip in the tail housing, I'm am starting to believe that it was from a bbf full size car.
I have a 289 that will be going into the car. I understand that the input shaft will need to be changed out. Is this a feasible tans to use in my application?
    Experts please speak up.

  2. I'm sure someone will give you correct info based on the numbers cast in. Looking at it my first thoughts were small early bolt pattern and not twin pattern says pre 1966. Then it's a 3 speed with a factory Floor Shift. As far as I can remember Mustangs and Falcons were the only cars with 3 speed on the Floor. Near as I remember all the Full size and FE cars with 3 speeds were still column shift. I'll hang around and see if my memory is any good.

  3. Looks like it may be a '61-64 full-size service replacement T10, circa '64. With the short pilot shaft on the input, that identifies it as a FE version. If you have a 5-bolt-bell 289, it will bolt up, you'll just need a steel ball-bearing pilot bearing rather than a bushing to allow using the short pilot shaft. If you have a '65-up six-bolt-bell motor, the degree of difficulty is much higher. Very few if any of the '65-up SBF bells have enough 'meat' to re-drill for the early pattern, although Ford did build a 'service' six-bolt-bell with both trans patterns but it's not overly common. If you can't track down one of those, Lakewood still offers a dual-pattern six-bolt scattershield that accepts either trans. You'll also need a larger-diameter '65-up front bearing cover as Ford enlarged the pilot hole in the bell and the early smaller one won't 'index' the trans properly. These are available new and will fit the early case. You'll still need the ball-bearing pilot, or change the input to the longer SBF type.

These are notorious for popping out of gear on deceleration, usually in 2nd.... This was a design flaw, B-W finally addressed this when they upgraded to the Super T10.

The popping out of 2 gear can be corrected

I think I have it's twin in the shed with some serious dental problems. My buddy gave it to me in pieces years ago.

Same Galaxie T10 transmission I have behind my FE. FE input shaft is 8 1/2", SBF is 8 7/8". That T10 transmission can be used behind a SBF by using the OEM Ford extended pilot bearing.

Or you could just put a 390 in the ranchero and really simplify it,that will probably be an easier swap than a SBF.

Yep, pretty easy with the FE, my 57 Ranchero had a 390 w T10, got 2 T10s with it

  10. I'd like a 390 as I have some factory machined heads with adjustable rockers on the shelf. Head casting is "EDC 6090E".
However, the 289 is what I have and is already assembled and on a stand just waiting to go into something. 1615748683107.jpeg 1615748697586.jpeg My%20tunnel%20ram%20289%202.jpeg

  11. Being that looks like a 2bbl manifold next to the adjustable rockers you probably have a 331 motor under those heads.

If thats an unmolested engine thats an early 58 with solid lifters, regardless of whether its a 332 or 352 it can be upgraded to a 390 by boring it .050 over and swapping in a 390 crank rods and pistons.

  13. I will take some pictures of the engine when I get home today. It has a 4bbl manifold on it if I remember correctly.

  14. 4bbl intake is what it has. Intake number for viewing pleasure. 20210315_160432.jpeg 20210315_160445.jpeg
