Projects 1963 econoline carburetor

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by iwanaflattie, Feb 21, 2021.

  1. hello I have this 1963 econoline that someone swapped a 200ci with a 3 speed 3 on the tree.
I want to BUY a ready to go carburetor for it.
What carb does the hamb member prefer for this engine.
I've asked in other groups but I haven't had a concrete response.
Other have done a conversion but they are unhappy with the results..
I just want a regular carb that will get the van moving till im ready to build a serious motor for a daily driver...

    Any preferences?
    Thank you 20210213_151528.jpg

That carb is known as the Holley 1946

An alternative is a Holley 1940
    try this NOS on Ebay

The Carter YF is just as good...They were used on later Ford 200's up the the bulletproof 300 I6 [and mid 70's Chrysler 6's]

  8. I second the YF. I have one on my Chevy 261 and had one on my Chevy 230, both ran better because of them.

  9. I had a '62 with a 200" six in it. it ran just fine with the original carb. Don't know if you can still get them rebuilt but I am sure you can get a kit for them.

  10. thank you

The van came with an incomplete carter..
The engine started with some gas down the carb but it wouldn't stay running..
    The carb was missing pieces..
I bought another carb from a gentleman who said it was in working condition,I installed it and the engine won't even fire,,

One area of concern might be carburetor height; as the Carter YF is somewhat taller than the original Autolite.

If you have plenty of clearance from the carb to the top of the doghouse, then a Carter YF, specifically calibrated for the Ford 200 six, is definitely the carburetor of choice. Carter also made an RBS for the 200, run if you are offered one!

(Opinion) - you are lucky the Economaster Holley had been sold. The Economasters were designed to be used on taxis, etc., where the top speed rarely exceeded 35 MPH. They were deliberately calibrated 13 percent too lean, for better gas mileage, and the sales catalogs gave a maximum vehicle weight for a vehicle for which they could be used.

The Carter YF is one of the easiest carburetor ever made to rebuild. If you don't find a new one, as you suggested, find a complete used one of the proper identification number, acquire a rebuilding kit, and rebuild it. Don't get one for a 300 or any other engine except the 200. They are available.

    Jon.

This probably won't help you, but I had the sort of problem you're talking about, I did a tune up on one of those 6 cyl vans out here in New Zealand, found the carb was causing most of the problems, (old gaskets, diaphragm u/s, no parts available locally)
I asked the guys here on the HAMB if it was possible to swap the carb out..
The answers I got was the carb (Autolite???) and distributor worked together, and a different carb would not work..
I solved the problem by fitting an Australian Ford Falcon Stromberg carb and Bosch distributor..
