So I have been thinking lately about how and why people decide to name their cars. I have started to call my projects after nicknames of dead relatives I feel have been circulating in my mind in one way or another while building. Can be for a bunch of different reasons, one being an uncle of mine died while building my model T roadster so it’s sorta named after one of his catchphrases if you will. How do y’all do? Any good stories or reasons for naming or not naming your cars? Skickat från min iPhone med H.A.M.B.
I miss the drag cars that had the names on them. Back when I started racing everybody's car had some kind of name on it.
The only two I've named are cars that look sort of like old race cars...I get that. I don't name other cars. I don't get that.
Yep... I was building my blown 55 in the late 80's when Stevie Ray died.. Painted on the gate "In Step" Actually it had two now that I look at the windshield... Weird picking your girlfriend up at her parents house.. h-hee
I named my '51 Ford... "the 51 Ford". Sometimes I'll call it "the 51" for short. I used to have a 50 Ford Coupe and a 50 F1. I called both of those.....the 50 Ford.
dream projects .... strait axle tunnlerammed 4sp 55 . purple panel and lace madness for paint foxy lady front engine dragster,,,,in the day fabricator john miss you dad
My uncle had a grey 46 or 47 Pontiac that the seat on the driver's side was sagging pretty bad. He said it had fallen arches. After that all the kids called the old Pontiac the Fallen Arches.
A French Canadian on an episode of Ice road truckers delivered his load on time, announced that everything was Tickety Boo. So I googled what the hell Tickety Boo was and found that the Royal Canadian Air force started using that code name while training for World War 2 to report that they were flying on schedule. Thought it was a good name for a bracket car back then, named my 67 Chevelle drag carTickety Boo Have only run only nostalgia events the last 9 years
I named my 41 Plymouth Brad because my uncle was a Plymouth dealer and that gave me an appreciation for Mopar. I named my black 57 Chevy Black Betty for the old blues song. I named my Tin Woody Woodrow because it worked. My 49 Buick is Big Bertha for obvious reasons. My 48 Buick Convertible was Sexy Sadie for the Beatles song and because she was.
Oh goody, a little ditty I can post again! I don't quite get the whole car naming deal myself either.................. but each/own. I like working in the shop with the doors open in the summer with AC/DC on high. I've also been known to let some "unpleasant" verbage loose out there also. So much so, the little neighbor kid must think my car is named "Son of a bitch".
I've tried thinking of a name for my cars....but it never sticks.....I just don't feel the connection. I usually just refer to them by the year. "The 48" or "the 56" or "the 58".
A mouth once commented “that’s quite an abomination” I thanked him with a big smile. The name stuck. I had a Jeep that pulled out a guy named Timmy who’s truck was stuck over an abandoned well once. I started calling it Lassie.
I've called mine several names but I wouldn't want to paint any of them on the side of the car. Might get me arrested.
I once had a race car. Was going to name it "Dragonslayer". But I became broke first and had to sell it. Just naming any car is something I have never done. I thought about it and decided that a car doesn't need a name since its an inanimate object.
I didn't name my Pinto but the soldiers/buddies at Ft. Ord called it "The Radical Rat" due to the Pinto being brown and the wheelie bars looking like a rat tail. Now, my 27 Coupe will be known by the plate as "BIG RED 1"
Not in my lifetime....I think it's lame.....But If you call your guitar "Lucille" I'm going sit down and listen..
Been awhile since we had one of these here "how did your car get it's name?" threads. Lady at the bank asked me if my '40 had a name. I said, "Yep, Ol' Blue." She asked, "Why not Ol' Red?" to which I replied, "Now that would be too obvious." Actually, I don't name my cars, although I would if I had a show car (like the Beatnik Bandit) or a drag car (like Shakey Puddin'). But for now it's just names like "the Nomad" or "the coupe."
