Hot Rods Anyone here drive a real street driven gasser?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Roothawg, Mar 1, 2021.

  1. Anything under 13.00 is fast as fuck in the real world. Like those 8 second cars I laugh at folks that say they can do 150 or 200 on the street. Come to the Salt, the Great White Dyno will show you how hard that is.

Love it! Is this the car that originated in Omaha, Nebraska?

I agree, especially in an old car that is HAMB-relevant. Going under 13.00 in a modern car may not be particularly noteworthy, some garden variety sedans can do it with ease.

I vaguely remember an article on Jimmy Shine and Tony Thacker's roadster that drove to Bonneville and went 200 mph. It said something to the effect that it only takes about 250 hp to get to 150 mph, but it takes approximately 750 hp to get to 200 mph. I tend to agree with that. I think an average performance car can get to 150, but very few could crack 200.

Correct, I race bikes on the paved 1-1/2 mile track in Maine...There's also one mile paved tracks in Arkansas and Texas. Met the safety requirements, generally stricter than drag racing, and see how fast your vehicle can go..

Malcolm, J Ukrop found an old picture of the Austin with its current paint scheme at a track in Nebraska around 1964-65 but other than that I haven’t found any other history. I’d love to know more about it but no one seems to recognize it.

I have nearly 10,000 miles on my straight axle Henry J, but only a couple of those were down the track. Guess that makes mine a poser.

  14. My 41 I don't consider to be a gasser but it's just as raw as the Henry J, bare steel interior, manual steering and brakes, no heat, no radio, no wipers, full manual reverse valve body, proper converter, 3.89 gears, blown all aftermarket full roller big inch engine.
It gets horrible milage but I drive it pretty regularly, kids to school, ice cream, out to lunch, cruise nights, doctors appointments etc, don't hesitate to jump in and drive it somewhere.
Currently putting a bigger blower and carbs on to be a little more efficient and create less heat and putting a stronger rear end in it, the old domino effect from making a bit of power up front.
    I'm addicted.....

  15. Nah, I'm a poser but my lil' brother is the real thing. His Morris was driven on cruise nights and cruising burger joints. We set it up low with Opel GT front suspension. Went 10.32 at 132 Scotty's morris on 6th street..JPG

I have a buddy with a 66 Fairlane with plates and driven on the street, and has run 9.01 so far, with a 440ci 1x4 Windsor smallblock- of course that Windsor came from Holbrook, and makes 1065 hp. Loud little sucker, you'd swear it had an FE in it

    impressive!

although he's probably not using 50 year old heads, a 12 inch converter, etc. Keeping the technology old, adds a slight twist to things.

I got out of high school 1969, my year book pic says who else drives a D/Gasser to school. LOL yes thats true. It was a 63 Volvo 544 (look that up, like a 3/4 scale 41 Ford sdn) 327 sbc with a 4sp hydo , ran 11's at about 115. (This was summer of 69) I drove it on the street with a muncy 4sp to school and that summer added the hydo and raced it at Maple Grove and other Pa, NJ tracks.
A few years back I ran a glass 33 Willys with ECGs. Not a true nostalgia gasser but it ran mid 9s and 140mph. (Stroker sbc with a 5sp. You want to have fun run 9s or more with a stick, great fun) It had a PA license and inspection sticker (lol) to run with Friday night street cars at Beaver Springs. Didn't see too much real street driving.

  24. Agreed.

Every old car with a straight axle isn’t a “gasser”. Most of real gasser engines cost high thirties to sixty thousand, produce close to 2HP/CID and of course, run on race fuel. I doubt any real gasser carries enough fuel to make much of a trip.

    This is C/G...

BTW, all one has to do to convert /S to
/G is remove front bumper. At least this is how it was.

I think the point may be getting skewed a bit. I'm not talking about a real race car that's on the street. I'm talking about a nasty street car with gasser tendencies.

Street car first, but just on the cusp of being too rowdy. I get that there are Drag Week cars that will run sub 8's, but they are not technically gassers. They are modern street cars with twin turbocharged 600 CID aluminum blocks.

Jim's car was not the norm on his Drag Week experience.

I love SEGA cars. I wish they were closer.

Local guy here in NZ has had his coupe registered and street legal in NZ for about 30 years, runs 10s easy . Currently running stack injected Hemi 4 speed.

Took it to Australia with a NZ team to race the Aussies in a Gasser deal last season. Here at Sydney track (WSID).

I've built a lot of real racecars too,but some fast street cars as well;. F-Stock NHRA Studebaker Lark Daytona S 1/4 mile 14 flat @ 107 mph. for 1965 on street tires that was kickass ,
My old high school 28A hotrod has been 102 MPH on the back straight timed by FSHP speed light. It's about as aero as a big brick.
Nether did I call those 2 race cars, fast street cars maybe. Real race cars* are all race*,anything other then that is a want-a-be racecar with compromise!!!
