Technical Probably a stupid question but humor me ~

The sealer...just use something old fashioned, that is not a silicone based product. I keep a can of this stuff around. Although I guess since it's in a plastic container, it's not really a can, is it?

Donut box works good. Ice cream box, not so good.

 

Don't blow a gasket now. Fix what you need when you get it.

 

LOL That's the point...he might not get a gasket...let alone one to blow.

 

I guess a Cheerios box would work for gaskets also. The only reason we bought Cheerios was to potty train the boys. We'd throw some in the toilet and tell them to try to sink the little O's while they were peeing.

 

Shit, if you don't get one let me know. I'm quite sure I have some new ones around I could send ya. I'll even spring for the stamp and envelope!

 

I like Cheerios or honey comb boxes for gaskets and the cereal stays crunchy in milk !!

I use the stuff @squirrel posted but made by loctite it’s a gasket sealant kind of like gasket shellac or loctite flange sealant.

but a nice clean paper gasket of your choosing should work just fine.

 

I guess I'm the only one that uses 30 pack boxes instead of cereal boxes.

A gasket story. A few years ago we were headed to the "Back to the Fifties" in our '47 DeSoto, car was running rough, pulled over to the side of the road to check things out. It was the carb gasket. Highway Patrol pulls up and advises us to head for cover; a tornado is coming. We're about 1/2 mile from town, hightail it in and by the time we pulled into a local Burger King. there was almost a foot of water in the parking lot. At least if felt like a foot 'cause3 we got soaked running inside. So between raindrops we pulled the carb for a pattern and proceeded to make a gasket. The material: a fries container and we didn't even have to buy the fries. The gasket is still in use in the car.
All this talk of food is making me hungry.

unfortunately as I was changing from a long pump to a short pump my local store could not supply the brackets and
pullies needed to do this. My local napa is pretty good, the auto zone and advance are ok for late model stuff, but useless for stuff you cannot plug a computer into.

 

I always have gasket material on hand just in case. Still use gasket shellac also. The 30 pack sounds interesting however...

 

You are not the only one to use a 30 pack box. I did discover a valuable tip if you do use a beer box, don't drink more than half the beer before you make your gasket and have paper towels and duct tape handy when using sharp objects in your half drunk assed condition.

Hey man, I appreciate the offer, I do need to point out the water pump is originally designed for a inline Chevy 6 cylinder, it's the W/P that is used with a zips riser which moves the fan up 5" to center the radiator. HRP

Are the gaskets the same as a small block? Cause that's what I have. I guess I shouldn't have assumed that!

Edit: I just looked at a zips riser and the water pump is totally different from a small block. My apologies.

So you use the Cheerios box for the gasket and what do you do with the bag of Cheerios put it back in the cupboard? I can see a problem here.

Grape Nuts boxes shouldn't be used if you want your water pump to last. We all seen what happened with Euell.

Is the impeller out in the open? If so I might do a trial fit and some measurements for impeller-to-block clearance before running gasket-less. And I'd probably consider it even if running with a gasket.
Sh*T just happens a lot these days. A rubbing pump impeller ain't good.

 

That sealer MUST be good if they use it on airplanes!
