I recently brought this barn find home. It had been enclosed in a building for over 50 years! It was last driven in 1965. The original owner passed away and a guy remembered there was an old car in an out building. Once one of the walls were removed the old car turned out to be the perfect kustom pallet, an untouched 1950 Mercury! I didn't need the car or was looking for another one, but years ago I passed up a similar 49 Merc from southern California and I still kick myself for it. Well I have to go to Lowe's and get a hacksaw..... 50 merc.jpg

Hold up on that hacksaw! I can see this beauty being dropped but not chopped.
I dig that it has the large rear wheel openings and would show off a nice set of
wheels beautifully. I guess I like the idea of a stock bodied Merc street machine
    once in a while.
Now that I've said my piece, turn it into something kool.

^^ do what works for you - talk about being the right place at the right time - think that many of us have had an opportunity to buy a special ride and let it go only to regret it later - for me I saw a super deal, took 15 minutes to think about it, already sold! 9. Nice car, I would have bought that too. Reminds me of a friend's car from a while back. He was always building hot rods, and I'd stop by if work took me to his area of the province. Stopped in and he showed me this car he picked up. Similar Merc, nothing but dual exhaust done to it. We took a a drive to go pick up some parts at another garage. What a sweet ride!
Sometimes, I just like the semi-stock originals.

  10. Quite a good score. My dad used to have one and I would probably have bought it too if the opportunity presented itself.

PXL_20210227_180549427.jpg PXL_20210227_180425231.jpg the car still wears the original paint. It looks like it rode a ditch line but no major damage to the panels.

This project will have to move to the back burner for now but in my mind I imagine a chop 5 1/2 inches in the front, 7 1/2 in the rear and the "B" post removed for the hardtop look. I won't bore you with the rest.... haha

The car was deep in Appalachia territory. I believe the original owner was a coal miner and he bought the car new. I have the original 1950 title! I happened to hear about it from a friend while visiting in the area and told him I didn't need it. That information was only a few hours old. The whole way home the wheels were turning and I tracked the car down the next day. It sounded to good to be true but I had to see it. But the next morning I headed back to the mountains in a winter storm, 18 degrees and a pocket full of money. The race was on because others were interested. I won! The following weekend I returned with a truck and trailer.

  22. Very Cool! BUT- just be prepared.....when you start peeling that particular onion. you might be in for some shock value.... If the outside shows what it does, get ready for what you haven't seen yet......
Cool you got it, but, there's a bit more than you see right now.
    Wishin' you luck!

Love it! It would be cool to know where and how it spent it's life and why it got put away for so many years.

Congratulations on obtaining this cool Mercury. Since it appears you have two other very cool cars, wouldn't it be more challenging to do a full frame off restoration and discover where all of the rust is and deal with it that way? I have to agree that not all 1950 Mercury's are candidates to be chopped!
I assume you are planning on keeping this car ? As stated, it's yours now and you should do it anyway which pleases you, but that being said, it would be so cool to restore it all to stock. IMHO, YMMV.
That is just my 8 cents worth of input.
