  1. ^The green custom @3W JOHN showed has those subtle scoops that look like they grew there.
    Great look!

  2. You are right, they do look like they belong there. HRP

  3. When I first hacked my '36 Willys together in 1967 I welded up a Thunderbolt teardrop bubble from sheet metal and welded it to the stock steel hood I welded into one piece. The steel part kept cracking and I figured out this was not a gasser style scoop. I made a mold of the steel hood and made a fiberglass one. Then I cut off the bubble and grafted on an official Hilborn scoop.

Something about the old Ford teardrop scoop just looks out of place on other makes of car to my eyes. Just like a stinger hood, or cowl hood looks odd on other than Chevy cars and trucks. Guess I'm getting too old.

“The Greek” 671 injector scoop: A real custom one, not just an add on fake scoop…

    Hello,

From our long standing history in drag racing and hot rods, comes this great old photo of what we both thought of as one of the coolest scoops ever made. Chris Karamensines, better known as “The Greek,” is one of the longest standing competitors in drag racing history. The oldest driver in history, the oldest driver to 300mph, and in 2020, was slated to race in more competitions until being sidelined by illness.

As drag racers, we have always liked the Hilborn Two Port Scoop as the first contact of the need for a good looking scoop on an injected motor. That was on the planning list for our 292 ci 671 SBC motor on top of the two port injection system that was waiting for us to install. But, as years rolled by, the design of scoops went from the standard for all to some pretty good looking metal work. This scoop on the Greek’s FED race cars says it all.

In 1959, we were able to film The Greek in his first Westcoast road trip. It was the late December drag race pitting the biggest names from the East/Midwest versus the Pacific Coast Drag Racers. The latest “Greek designed” exhaust that was to become the standard for the top racers across the country was displayed in all of its glory, for the first time on the west. For the next several years, most top racers had this exhaust design on their race cars.

But, it was that cool scoop that made our day… On that same, So Cal day at Riverside Raceway, we also saw the famous Speed Sport Roadster with its memorable scoop, too.

My initial hood treatment once the 8 deuce manifold on the 392 was installed. I just needed a bit of hood clearance.

it took a few years, but I found a 52-54 Mercury hood, got it cut down and fitted to my 51 hood and opened the scoop using 5/16” round rod. I love it for a traditional custom look, yet it is not a common choice.

  22. @scotty t - that fits the car perfectly. Diggin' the way you dropped the ''beak'' down the front. Wish my bodywork looked that nice!

Scoop on my Austin. I think it was the Shelby scoop from Speedway.
