I really like what you did with this 47 Dodge business coupe, the caddy tail fins and how you did the fender skirts are great additions!

Oldsmobiles..Brisbane.. Oldsmobiles..Adelaide.. Cherry '55 sighted last Sunday. I've hot-rodded it here. OT Keith Duckworth FI mid '80's Cosworth F1 V8 pulled down was mighty impressive in symmetrical beauty and component packaging.

    Hello,

One of our early favorite, drag racing drivers was none other than Doug Cook. This was the time period a time before the famed SWC era in those different Willys Coupes. To us, he was inspiring as his mechanical skills (did his own tuning and mechanics) stood out with his famed 1937 Tahitian Red Chevy coupe. It was in different Gas Coupe and Sedan Classes as the motors changed. Starting with the record for C/Gas and then a record and plenty of wins in the B/Gas class competition. We saw the progression.

My brother was especially interested as the 37 Chevy was street legal and extremely fast. The SBC motor could have been put together by any mechanical person as per speed parts required. But, it was the driving that put Doug Cook over the top.

He was small in stature, but huge in mechanical knowledge and skills. Those skills, plus being lightning quick at the start line gave his opponents fits during each elimination races.

Despite the early drag racing films at Lion’s Dragstrip, the blackwalls, all around, give the coupe a much better stance and look. IOHO… But, at the time, 1959-60, it was the epitome of a real Gas Coupe that just won almost every race we saw. A true record holder and lightning quick reaction times from the start.

    Doug Cook 1959-60

upload_2021-2-26_5-6-15.png The look, over the early years.

Now, remember, this was in those early years of the Gas Coupe And Sedan Class rules. It had to be street legal with lights/brake lights, license and full interior. Later on, the rules were relaxed with some modifications made that would have put those later Gas Coupes in the Altered Class during the Doug Cook 37 Chevy era. Removing bumpers and running boards to lighten the coupes, etc.

Doug Cook's 1937 Chevy Coupe: a real gas coupe for the Gas Coupe and Sedan Class in the early days of drag racing in the USA. No "up in the air" look, the power and acceleration makes the front end come up and tail go down on the runs/shifts. A fully street legal champion/record holder during our time at Lions Dragstrip and other So Cal dragstrips.
