Had some issues with the nailhead in my coupe so the roadster project has been on hold. 91BC023A-E6CF-48A9-B3C6-DE655371F45F.jpeg

The car is running again now so roadster progress will be coming. Engine and trans is mounted, setting up the rear suspension next.

Subscribed and following I like the east coast channeled look being a New Englander. Butcher away as far as I am concerned to make it work for you. Great workmanship and looks good. Thanks for sharing with us.

Nice! Didn't Brizio restore one that was built along these lines? Bob

I’ve been working on getting the rear suspension setup the last couple weeks and finally got it figured out. First step was to secure the rear axle at ride height and then sweep the rear of the chassis up for axle clearance.

    86C2F8B1-CDD4-4A93-BBA4-EF85B9D8B8F7.jpeg

I picked a suspension setup that was very compact to keep from getting into the cabin area of the floor. This is all new to me so I asked many peoples advice and did as much research as I could on lengths, angles etc. There are some sacrifices due to space but it has excellent articulation. I used a Johnny joint on the axle and regular heavy bushing on the frame side for vibration. F3E59648-317B-4814-A258-BAEAB3ADB718.jpeg

Next up was to build a K member off the trans mount with some pre bent tubing I picked up. AFB188F1-A0A3-4E33-936E-AC7F2D908DCB.jpeg

Then moved on to the front end, I had this old dropped axle for a while and used it with a nice original spring and shackles. Offy headlight stands with nice set of king bees I picked up off the HAMB. 346673D1-9D55-4AA9-8CDF-A8C8C63BA4FA.jpeg

Had to do a mock up for a good stare session today.

That’s where she stands as of now, I need to make some sub rails and get the body mounted securely soon.

Really like the rear set up. Used that similar set up on circle car setup. Really hooked up

I decided to try and make my own driveshaft after talking with a friend of mine that has done it a few times. Ordered up some Spicer weld yokes and a piece of 2” .120 DOM. First it is critical to have the yokes in line so I clamped them down to this heavy box tube and put one tack weld on each end. ABF7EB64-73BC-49E7-B8BF-DBB3D0AD421F.jpeg

Next up installed the u-joints and bolted it in. I got both ends to within .002 with 4 tack welds on each. Then welded it all the way around in one pass, allowing to cool on its own. I was out a little bit after welding and did a couple heat shrinks with the torch to bring it back down to .001-.002 . We’ll see how it feels but I don’t think getting it balanced will be necessary.

Moving on to getting the firewall chopped up to fit, there are many more hours of work ahead to finish it but at least I have some direction now.

Firewall was a bit of a challenge, after sectioning it 6”s I had to fix a bunch of cracks, fill holes and transition the beads into the lower portion. 232B0D6B-2984-40C9-9CEB-22E40066F6EB.jpeg

Once it started to take shape, I swapped the firewall feet side to side. Now the bolts are on the inside because it just lined up better with the narrowed frame.

I had contemplated making the firewall bolt in to save some hassle, but really wanted it to come together with the body like it was supposed to. Came up with these simple mounts on the chassis to utilize the original style mounting.
    2758124A-AD3D-4DF2-8C4B-03AC2608ECD4.jpeg

Made up these basic but pretty stout rear shock mounts out of some old wishbone pieces and aftermarket shock studs. A51EAB8E-C143-49AF-8182-D80FDEE02A8F.jpeg

Working on sub rails and building the floor next.

I was able to make some new sub rails by bending some 18ga over the edge of my table into a Z and then using the shrinker / stretcher to match the shape of the chassis. Also started on floor bracing and tunnel work out of 18ga to see if it was strong enough and it seems like it will work good. 1EB5DEBA-9052-46C0-8756-05D98FEC9595.jpeg

Yep really excellent work. That rear suspension set up is trick.
Should we start a gofundme so that firewall can take a trip to the chrome shop?
