  1. Found this fuel pump on the shelf.
Part number comes up 235. Looks different than the ones I have.

think this one is boxed incorrect
Doesn’t match up with the pic from the parts store.

  2. The water may actually cool the intake. My Fenton 2x intake runs very hot just from proximity to and slight contact with the Fenton headers I have on my 216. The intake has to be ground a bit on the back side to use the headers. There is no way to hook up heat with the headers, just stock manifold, and I have no drivability issues on cold or hot days even with no hood.

the angled fitting(yellow arrow) empties into the crank case. The large fitting is plumbed to the oil pump.
Haven’t seen one like this but I’m no straight 6 expert either.

Something that has been discussed on Inliners a lot is that if you're using a non-261 cylinder head to put on your 261. One of the rows of steam holes is drilled into the cylinder head at an angle. And if you drill straight down at a 90° angle, you will not drill into the water jacket and just have a blind hole.

  7. Seen that.
Was checking that out in the head from the 261.
I got access to a mill that I could get very precise if needed but I think a simple jig could be set up.
    Seen a few just guess.

Think I can add this dual groove pulley to the balance.
Remove the factory single, fab an aluminum spacer, add the dual pulley.
    Measurements say it will fit.

here is that updraft set up. That exhaust manifold looks like a prime candidate for being split.

Have seen one use the stock/ offy style intake and a cut 1/2 ton truck exhaust manifold that bolts to it. It was cut right after the area where it bolts up to the stock heat box.( simple plate welded and ground smooth- Then cut the COE rear part and weld a small plate to close it up - you had to look close to notice. It looked and worked super .
You are not that far from me - I hope its warmer there than it is here.

  12. The incorrect oiling filtration could possibly be the reason for this

bearings have even wear but lots of imbedded bits of metal.

  13. Yes, that looks familiar.

  14. showed the youngest what pastigauge was tonight. We checked the mains, .003 for the first 3. Slightly more on number 4.
the crank has some fine scratches that would probably polish out. I have a standard crank that plastigauged at .002 and no scratches. Might use this one.

a 57 235 I have had this oil tube under the lifter cover. The 261 does not have this and another 235(1960) doesn’t either.
Wondering what it’s purpose is and why the inconsistency
    Extra top end oiling?

The tube is discontinued in '55 or '56, hollow headbolt replaces it. You may have a '55 block there. 848 head ?

  17. Yes, that one has a 848 head on it.
I pulled it from a 57 step van. Possibly an older block.

The youngest took the head apart tonight.
Seats look good. Exhaust guides feel loose.
    Couple intake valves are pitted.

There are two ways to oil the rockers. Both use the drilled head bolt. The first is a inside the lifter valley with a 1/8" line running from the rear up to behind the head bolt. This line is completely hidden when the cover is on. The second comes from a T in the external oil filter line, over or around the valve cover and into a NPT fitting on the outside of the head by the drilled head bolt.

CurtB from Edmonton AB has probably done more research on 261 heads then anyone alive. Here is a thread from Inliners where they discuss steam holes. All Canadian Pontiacs that were equipped with a 261 and came with a 848 head that was drilled with steam holes. I don't think all US 261s came with the 848 head, so if you find an 848 head, it might be off a 235 and won't have the steam holes therefore if you are putting the head on a 261, they need to be drilled. The reason for this is the cylinders are closer together and need additional water circulation.
