Technical ***February 2021 Banger Meet Thread - 6 More Weeks Shop Time!***

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Jiminy, Feb 2, 2021.

  1. Hence the I think,,, been wrong before and it will happen again, away from home at the moment, otherwise I could’ve wandered out and checked both A and B.

  2. A and B starters are both 3 bolt fixing, but the starter switch fixings are different. Four screws on the A and three screws on a B starter switch.

I just picked up this A engine. i was told it was built in the 40's. I don’t know what’s inside, but it has a lot of coolness on the outside. Full pressure oil lines, chrome cam cover, chrome pulleys and a Cragar valve cover. What do you guys think of the oil lines? Hey Dawg,
Thanks, for pics AND info !
Please keep us informed regarding X classification. Sounds like someone is finally thinking about being inclusive of others.
BTW... if you dont have time to inform of details, perhaps there is some way of getting details from a website ??

I did some searching when Dawg first posted this so I could update the thread first post but have not been able to find any info about 2021 on the Santa Margarita Ranch website or on the Facebook page.

  9. The concern in the discussion of group of organizers of the event was over the potential of the use of extremely modified (thereby powerful) engines in very light chassis'. The potential being speed and controllability even within the confines of 1/10th of a mile! It'll probably be a ongoing topic at further meetings of the event organizers!

  10. That's probably because the moderator of the Facebook Page was not at the meeting last Monday, Feb. 15!

BTW: What only really came out of the meeting of the Santa Margarita Time Trials group was the date: June 26h 2021! All the other input was "What If" and "Maybe if we...!

B model starter. Should of waited until I got home before posting earlier.

    Hey Dawg,
    Thanks for details.
My opinion... that horse (power) left the barn loong time past. Art/olive Moore... among many others... are good examples !
I forgot, they are in different class. Oh well.

  16. Art and Olive Moore have still been active so far! I think Art ran in the 2019 (2020 was cancelled) Santa Margarita event. I believe Olive's retired from driving. Their cars ran in a F.A.S.T. modified Class! They're confirmed "Gearheads". They would show up at Vintage Racing events that didn't feature just Ford "Bangers". They came into my garage at California Speedway (now AAA) during a race weekend several years ago!

First saw an X class car at a FAST event in Utah about 4 or 5 years ago
and came to the conclusion that these are purpose built cars that have as much to do with Model A’s as a NASCAR race car does to a show room Mustang. Every since Denny and his light blue street legal race car shows up at a FAST Hillclimb, there is a drop in class participation. My truck with a CRAGAR head has to run the same class as his.

    @Jiminy
Appreciate what you do at the first of every month and links to things of interest...
Just thinking that it would be handy to have a link to the previous months meet on the front page too.
If it makes sense, thank you and if not, thank you anyway...

Got the TK-5 into the '29 Roadster and someone was asking about a more drivable A with B motor and oil pan. It was pointed out that you have to make provisions for brake and clutch peddles. I addressed that and I will share photos of my solution.
    Out with the old, IMG_20210124_140922771.jpg
    The TK-5 is out of a '83 to '87 2wd Ranger. IMG_20210127_125918138.jpg
I am seeing how things fit up. The TK-5 is a bit of a red headed step child as near as I can tell there is very little support parts left out there. It came to me on an engine/transmission combo that I got from a fellow HAMB'r that was removed from a '32 Cabriolet. It came with the bellhousing, which is out of cast iron. Don't know much other than it is old school and you need to use the shorter AA throw out bearing with this set up. IMG_20210131_155406688.jpg
Figured I needed to try out a 22# Sterling, dynamic absorbing, flywheel on it. Yes, it got safety wire and Loctite on the fasteners. That's like a belt and suspenders....
I forgot that you have to remove the oil pan to exchange. There is a tab on the left side, lower part of the photo,
A bracket for the master cylinder attaches here. The piece of tubing in front of it is for the cross shaft for the Model A pedals.

The wind is gusting to 70-80 mph and the internet is freaking out, so I thought I'd post and then carry on before I lost all and had to start over again.
The pilot on the input shaft is 15mm on the TK-5 and 17mm on a B transmission. A 6203 bearing is 17mm bore, so a 15-17 mm bushing was three count, for less than $6.00 an Amazon, free shipping. Problem solved.
Well, I can't add photos. I'll be back

The flywheel is drilled for a 9" Ford V8 pressure plate. I tried to find a 9" disc that had the 23/24 spline count. No such luck, so I used the Ranger disc which is 8 7/8".

Install cross shaft and throw out bearing and stab. I had to re-clock the arm for hook up to the clutch linkage as well as shorten it. You can see the first bracket I bent on my big ass vice by heating and bending. It attaches to the motor mount holes on the flywheel housing IMG_20210210_133807576.jpeg IMG_20210211_205013176.jpeg

The bracket half that bolts between the tab on the frame and the back of the first bracket. The pedal cross shaft is drilled for the fastener on the lower corner of the bracket. I added grease zerks on the pedals. The bracket is hole sawed for the master cylinder. I welded the nuts to it for ease of disassembly on the side of the road. Looking at the last photos, I should add that I drilled the brake pedal for a return spring and had to relocate the lever for the brake rod clevis. It is real short but the master cylinder is off of a Ford truck... Fruit jar style, 1" bore and all the ratios worked out well

The brackets mounted ready for the pedal shaft.

The pedal shaft and pedals mounted. I used a shaft locking collar to tighten up lateral play. You can see where the lever used to be on the brake pedal assembly IMG_20210212_100948515.jpeg IMG_20210212_080255686.jpeg

I don't have a photo of the ebrake bracket, but it was a head scratcher to figure out. There is an interior shot with it back in its original location. Now if I move the shifter hole back.
The new location is just in front of the seat.

    Hey Dawg,
    Thanks for sharing !
Yeah, about two years ago, I spoke with Art.
We talked about possible sale of Olives roadster. They are two really nice dedicated banger experts. Going to miss seeing them race. X
