"...One of the So Cal locals had a small shop in a small industrial area and kept doing business until it just was time to close the shop. It was a sad day as pinstriping is a skill that is not a thing to pass on to the next generation. You have to have those artistic skills and a lot of patience, as well as a good client base."

    Hello,

There is hope yet, yesterday my wife and I were coming back from a drive through, prescription pick up and drove by the old industrial shops area. As we were driving by this row of shops, it used to be buzzing with activity, including a local pinstripe business. Then, the doors were closed for quite some time and finally, the hand lettered signs disappeared. But, today, the garage door was up and a 57 Chevy rear fender tail fin was sticking out, inside of the garage.

Is the pinstripe business back? The signs were still down, but the sight of a sharp 57 Chevy tail fin and an open garage work space door being up, shows promise.

This place has always been near a couple of our favorite metal shaping/metal construction shops, just next door. Then there is the classic art museum and woodworking place that is still in business. Finally, just down the street is a Chevy truck shop and a hot rod/custom car shop. It certainly is an eclectic arrangement of cool shops near the beach.

    Hello,

Having grown up in So Cal and we saw plenty of pinstriping guys and girls doing their thing. It is always impressive that an artist has the skills along with their creative talents to do both things, art for art’s sake and custom car/hot rod pinstriping. Here is artist, extraordinaire, Rick Rietveld creating his version of a custom car and an accessorized pinstriping motif.

Growing up in So Cal, one would be involved in the trends of the coastal lifestyle, surf, hot rods, clothes, day to day life, etc. Maui and Sons was a hit from the beginning and it hit the stores nation wide to showcase the So Cal lifestyle as we all came to enjoy.

Concerning his work, Rick says, “My art tells stories of better lands, fairer seas, adventure, spirituality, beautiful women-but, the story’s ending is left up to the viewer. It’s a reaction to my daily experience ensconced in my passion of the surf and beach lifestyle that I have enjoyed for the past 40 years.”

  27. Not much striping on Taboo as it doesn't need it, all of this work was done by "Spirit" here in the Portland/Beaverton area.
