We Love Sedan Deliveries

Chevy Sedan Delivery's were popular in the stock drag classes for a couple of reasons. No back seat, no window glass and no window regulators made them lighter than station wagons, and they were part of Chevy's "Commercial" or truck line, so they could be had from the factory with a 4 speed manual or 4 speed Hydromatic transmission.

 

^^^^Sorry, but this is't true^^^^. You could get them with either the column shifter Muncie 318 transmission, or a cast iron Powerglide. I don't even think the 1957, optional Turboglide, was ever offered in Sedan Deliveries 57-60. The ONLY reason NHRA "allowed" the 4 speed Hydra-Matics, was because Deliveries were built. titled, licensed as trucks. They were't even in the passenger car brochures, even though they were built on the passenger car chassis/bodies; they were only in the truck brochures. No Hydra-matics, and no 4 speeds of any kind came in production Sedan Deliveries. NHRA dis-allowed the Hydra-Matics in 1971, followed by going with the 20 years rule in 1972 that ended Junior Stock for the most part. A few years ago, NHRA began letting "some" of these cars back into stock, but now they allowed them to run with 3 speed automatic transmissions, and some other powertrain changes, such as Bow Tie and aftermarket blocks, and other parts. You can't even directly bolt in an old Dual Range Hydra-Matic without fabricating or buying specially made transmission mounts (I believe B & M made them for a while), building a driveshaft end that would accept a Hydro slip yoke (But, I recently read the internal bore can be machined large to fit the Muncie 318/cast iron Powerglide style output shaft). Some guys even trim the lower firewall pinch weld to clear the Hydro better. Most guys also used to make a removable trans tunnel using another trans tunnel from a parts car, to get to the band adjustments, and removing the Hydro from the car, actually truck. They were a heavy transmission.

Guy has arrived from CA and plans to DRIVE this one back from VA... after he completes the buy!
His wife came with him... talk about an adventure!! What a road trip! I plan to get a picture before they take off.
Stay tuned. It's only 2,687 miles but he's taking a short cut to his daughter's home in NC which is actually EAST of here I think! When you are 2,700 miles from home I guess a little out of the way short cut doesn't matter.
Especially to see a daughter, and her family!!

Dang! I was looking forward to following his trip home after giving him an ice cream send off. I agree that the Ford in a Ford would have done the job.
I will say he was very enthusiastic... about leaving right away with my car. Maybe he'll get the sequence right on his next visit... didn't stay long enough to even get ice cream after realizing I wasn't taking a check that should clear... "in a week or two!"
Apparently I didn't spend enough time emphasizing the sequence of events!
Maybe with some states opening up and the weather warming up the market for hot rods will warm up as well.
Anyway I did learn a lot about the myth of cashiers checks being "just like cash" as well as the potential for "slip-ups" with wire transfers thanks to my excellent bankers.
On the other hand, another interested party wants to trade a nice coupe. Waiting for pictures...
