Hi. This week I will be working on a Facel Vega, a French car from the fifties with a Mopar power train. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facel_Vega?wprov=sfla1 There is an issue with the Powerflite transmission. When in reverse, at first, it will not react to any increase in engine revs and suddenly, it will take of. So I'm told. I have never worked on these types of transmission, so I thought I do some research. I cannot find a lot of documentation online. Any suggestions where I can find any troubleshooting information on them? Or some clever thoughts on the problem? Thanks in advance. Sent from my online shouting device
Suggest you start by changing the fluid and filter if this has not been done. Symptom suggests a clogged filter especially if it is worse when cold. Inspect the bottom of the oil pan for debris. The less there is the better. There may be some soft dark matter worn off the clutch plates but a large amount of metal shavings is bad news. On the newer Torqueflite transmissions there is a seal on the reverse piston that sometimes fails, then the car will not go into reverse gear. It is not hard to replace or expensive when you have the pan off. This video shows changing the fluid and filter, and replacing the reverse gear piston seal on a later Torqueflite.
If it wireoperated as on Chryslers you could check the adjustment. In neutral the peg that activate starters safetyswitch is in the middle of the hole. When you remount the safetyswitch you need a Ohm meter or something similar. Screw it in slowly until it make contact on the peg. Then about 3/4 turn and it right adjusted.
Reverse band is stuck or warn. Reverse band servo is not sealing. If the Powerflite has a reverse pressure port, use an oil pressure gauge and check for proper pressure when in reverse . Older Motors manuals have troubleshooting and pressure charts
Thanks all. I'm going to work on it Thursday. I will see what I can find. Sent from my online shouting device
The servo for the reverse brake band has very much free play. Other than that, it looks fine. I had to close it up; the owner wants it moved. Too bad. I guess he will be shipping the car to transmission expert. Sent from my online shouting device
