I picked up a few pistons n rods recently. Look to be Jahns, for a 283 chevy. Unfortunately only have 7. Would it be better to try and market them individually? Or ? Sent from my SM-G970U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I think I would spend a little time to clean them up so folks can see if they really are in useable shape or not. It will help your sale. Price will dictate if they will sell as a group or not.
Am I wrong in thinking that no one is going to want to put used pistons in their engine? Maybe just the rods.
There is a market for used pistons like those. Maybe not worth a fortune, but I wouldn’t be scared at all of throwing them in a 283 if I could get the last one.
I think the 6-cylinder 230 / 250 Chevies have the same bore. Maybe useful in a HAMB dragster w/ a six. Plus a spare. That is an old looking ring size package. Modern pistons use lower tension (skinny) rings. The pin clips are missing too. I wonder if the rods are pressed in or floating?
Clean them up and sell them ( give them ) to a Trophy - Awards business so they can make car show trophies.
If you can't find someone who wants them for what they are.take them to a swap meet and sell them to some artsy type to make whatever.
We used to build grenade motors way back when. Buy a bunch of cheap stuff at swapmeets and asssemble a engine to see if it would run. 7 pistons like these and another that looked close. Some old cam with no specs from one swapper, lifters from another guy, heads from another. Screw it together and see how long it would hold up under flogging on the dirt roads back home. Inexpensive fun.
Many? Some? My buddy threw used pistons in his 350 to get his car on the road. It's just a casual driver. I don't know, that was like 18 months ago. Still running great. I should note though, they were gave to him for nothing. So I would argue, yeah someone could use them. Probably get a few bucks out of them. It depends if you know 7 people who need one or one person that needs 7. Us retired guys will use what we can get.
The 283 pin height is the same as the 230 , 307 pistons will work in a 250.....I think you need to build a hot 230 , six slugs and a spare!
Grenade motors? I used to call them welfare motors. The connotation is pretty obvious there. I have bought used pistons many times, and even built a few engines with them. As long as the skirts are't ate/beat up, and the ring lands are good, they're good to go. No special balancing either; they ran and lasted just fine. I'd be more concerned that those are an older, cast piston, and not as well machined as more modern cast pistons. Some of the rod caps are reversed, and it's difficult to see if they're 1rst or 2nd design small journal with the dirt and rust; I'm guessing 1rst, and that would go along with the pistons "age". First, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh place; everybody wins something! What the heck did I hit to wind up with this font? I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Even though same compression height 230 has 1/4" more stroke so high comp is now very high compression.
283 pistons are drop in for a 230 inline six, 307 fit the 250 inline, both without any modifications to piston, rod, or crank.
