I have searched can't find, how to change a 40 ford rear end from closed drive shaft to open. In the back of my tire smoked mind, this was common in the 50's? Hope someone knows how. Now on a Chevrolet closed shaft rear you can use a 3/4 ton drive shaft.

Easiest is to find a ‘42-47 Ford PU rear. But have also read that other methods work, with machining an adapter and using a seal, etc. pretty sure kits are available, but don’t recall who from

  4. As Budget36 said, 40's Ford pickup rear end parts... or buy one from Hot Rod Works or other vendors.

For converting to open drive Hot Rod Works is the only way to go. Stay away from the cheaper kits.

You’ll also have to come up with some radius rods to mount he rear ended once you get rid of the torque tube.

Absolutely spend the little bit extra and go with Hot Rod Works kit. I have had no issues whatsoever with mine. Good quality stuff!

As for the radius rods here is one way of doing it. Two tubes one each side from a brackets fitted to the wishbone at the Red dot to brackets fitted to the banjo at the Yellow dot.

Dude I may have to" steel"your idea on the rear ladder bars you made that is a dope idea why did I not think of that. That is exactly the idea I needed. I hope you do not mind but I love the look of that. And it is a period look. I'm building a 32 mid engine potvin blower set up. You can check it out in build threads 32 gbones32coupe

That looks like a Model A rear end. Nothing interchanges with a '40.

  22. If the 40 Ford rear is a truck rear you will need a machinist that knows his shit. In the truck rear the pinion and the driveshaft was one piece.

Other wise you can get the parts you need from Speedway as a kit. I know that is whimping out but it is the easiest way.

Thanks and its a true story, go back up a few posts. Then you will see the way I now going. Found a super deal on converted to open shaft model A rear. I guess I will convert old school 40's backing plates ect. to juice drum brakes.
