Can you build a real Chevy 302?

Totally Agree! The hamb is my favorite go to car site! With that being said I have and have had OT 60’s stuff but try my best to not cross that cut off line. Oh how I wish there was a “traditional” 65-71 muscle car site that had a phone app and moderators that put as much time in as the H.A.M.B. ones do!

Hey, how about this.......the HAMB steers clear of the whole "musclecar" deal but what if someone swapped in a "real" 302 in a car that the HAMB acknowledges, say, a tri-5 car.
May need to start a new thread, note to self.

 

Somewhat related and something I learned 50 years ago (+/-) in Engineering School at Mizzou: 355/113 comes out to pi for 7 (iirc) decimal places. I'll never remember the actual decimal numbers but I'll always remember 355/113 (2 fives, 2 threes, and 2 ones, the first 3 odd numbers). This is MORE than adequate to calculate cubic inches for any engine we'll ever be building. Perhaps if you're scratch-building an F-1 or Indy engine it might need to be more accurate.

And fwiw Tommy McCray (weekender on here; RIP) called the engine in his national record holder yellow Henry J that he built in the mid 60's a 301. I wish I would have asked him if he punched a 283 or used a 327 block. Too late now.

 

I always thought 22/7 would get you close. But 3.14 always worked for me.

 

Yeah; 22/7 gets you to 2 decimal places and that's good enough for many applications.

 

Bore X bore X stroke X .7854 X 8 (cylinders) = answer!...

Just tossing this out there for you guys... I still have that 301 short block with big pop ups built using a 57 block. It's in the pay it forward ads on this site. It came outa my Vette project that was in storage since the 70s. Free to anyone who wants to come to San Diego and get it And It's waaaay HAMB friendly...Update, the 301 was picked up by a fellow hamber today 1 -31

 

^^^^^Same thing I did with my 292 CID, SBC, solid lifter, domed piston, engine I had; gave it away, and a Canadian fella came down and got it.^^^^^ Always a good thing to do if someone truly needs/wants/will use what you're giving away. I know some of the things I've given away wound up getting sold by the guys who "needed" them, like the guy I gave all my Hydro's and extra parts to. I realize a lot of people refer to sbc cranks as SJ and LJ but for the sake of accuracy I used MJ,I mean come on the 400 has been with us since 1970 after all,and if the 350 and 400 were both LJ you wouldn't have turn the mains down on a 400 crank to get it to fit in a 350 block.

As far as the 301 vs the 302 even though the dimensions are the same,I've always heard a 4 inch bore 327 SJ block with a 3 inch 283 crank referred to as a 302 and a 283 bored over to 4 inches referred to as a 301.I always thought they were using it to refer to the different block source.

 

So, a guy walks into a bar and says "who owns the Mustang outside", it says Boss 302 on it.
Guy stands up and says "I do, why do you want to know"?
First guy says "Just wondering who would put a Z/28 engine in a Mustang?

Ok, so quick question. I have a small journal 327, a 3735236 crank and a set of L2210A pistons. What would the correct rod be for that combination be for a 302? Thank you in advance!

 

Chevrolet engineers and management would NEVER allowed 301” to be used… that was a Hot Rodders engine right from the beginning. I also believe one of most racing sanctioning bodies moved the standard 300” limit to 305” to accommodate the popularity of the new Chevrolet V8’s. SBC was never mentioned even after the W engines were out. The Corporate 302 came 12 years later..

 

And we'll ignore the fact that a Z/28 302 was no match for a B2 in race trim. Right now I'm trying to swing a purchase of my old roommate's completely original survivor 69 Boss 302- only thing not stock is it had the factory piston upgrade under warranty. I have been taking care of that car since 1974 when he got it- best handling car I have ever driven, doesn't understeer or oversteer, point the wheel and it goes there. Original white with black trim, looks like the original prototype

 

On the OP question, call Scat and tell them what you are doing and have. They have several "levels" of rods way better than factory offered if your not a purist....................

 

302 pistons, 327 block, 3.0in stroke. 283 crank... your building a nice sj 302.

Ok, thanks. All good info. The crank I am using is a forged 283 crank though…I should have been more specific.

 

Great, my mistake, I missed the comma after 327 block, your fine..5.7in rod. SJ 327 bump rods are strong..

I have ssme build where I put sj 283 crank in lj 4 bolt block. Milodon makes thick main bearings for std journal cranks.

You got the hard to get part...Pistons......

 

All SBC's stock combination 265,283,302,305,307,327,350 use the 5.7 con rods. 6.0in rods come into play with 6in rod pin placement pistons. 400sbc is the odd ball.

 

I just acquired a set of 327 flat top, Forged pistons that are standard bore, with 3000 mi. Also, a like new set of rods (aftermarket), and 3 fresh 327 cranks. I have (2) 283 short blocks, a '58 and a '65. Without a sonic test of wall thickness, I am wondering which one might be the better candidate to bore to 4" ?

 

The '65 is definitely OUT since Chevrolet redesigned the casting around '63-'64 to a thinner bore wall. The '58 may be good, but I'd still get the walls measured. These were the blocks that the OG 301's were built with...so I'm told...
