  1. More photos the bottom photo is the test plug valve cut to 85 percent of the finished valve size. I use these to keep the runners uniform in size and they also keep the port on center as it is ported.
    some more before and after shots 20210122_111440.jpg 20210122_111452.jpg 20210122_141713.jpg 20210122_141851.jpg 20210122_142015.jpg

Polishing the combustion chambers to as close to a mirror finish as possible will add 1% - 2% power.

  3. So true thinking about ceramick heat shield coatings on the combustion chamber and the valves depends on cost.

Ford sure had some rough castings finish but then again they also had some nice ones.

  6. Some say a rough casting in the runners help keep the fuel vaporized.
I have seen port runners with golf ball like surfaces
( little divots all over them)..
Years ago we would take a carbide bur and grind one side off and alow it to jump around in the port and it would leave a rough surface somewhat like they are doing with CNC machines doing the divots.
We did it Old skool lol

  7. Great work day with some of the crew got lots done, pulled the mock up engine and tranny, worked some more on the rear spring height, second coat of paint on the roll cage.
Boy does the salt rust things. I find we have to pull the whole truck down to clean up the rust. Mostly the chassis and underside of the body.. sorry no photos today as the ones I took were in the wrong format and would not download.

Yep...... now think of your newer pickup with all its electronics and the rear door of your trailer. I had to re build a lower trailer door plate and drilled for grease fittings on the 3 hinges...just sitting on the salt for a week even when you think it’s dry the vapor it going up into everything. 2 years ago I had to replace 4” of aluminum siding around my trailer wheel openings. It was turning to Alka-Selzer and I cut out 2” extra before replacing.... no more.

    Looks good so far.

In addition to mirror polishing the chambers I would "skinny up" the valve guides and form a "shark fin" lead-in on the port roof .

[I couldn't help noticing the rust on your air compressor tank. How old is it? I recently checked out some alarming air tank failures on youtube and plan to upgrade to a new air compressor myself. Mine has started to bleed down pressure overnight - a sign of internal rust-out. Stay safe.]

  11. I plan to trim down the valve guides but want to flow the head and see whats up so far.
Trying to raise the roof of the ports and then look at the guides. I will be replacing the guides with bronze guides and taper them down on the port ends

  12. I ordered the valve and spring assembly today.
4 to 6 weeks to get them.
Another hold up but thats how it goes with one off parts. Cant really flow test the head without them..

Then a fine polishing of the chambers and exhaust ports comes next

John, if push comes to shove, you may be able to buy a copy straight from Ol' Skool Rods (Murpho Publishing). Their number is 1-877-655-6423.

  26. Good turnout for today's work day, the whole crew was present.
We didn't have much to do as I'm waiting on parts again. But we did finish some small things and did a much needed shop clean up.
    I love these guys IMG_5331.jpg
