History starts with family. This is a 1959 photo of my wife’s family taking one of their family’s “famous” Salton Sea adventures. The three kids were stair stepped in age and that made it a little exciting while living in a smaller house and going on long road trips in the Chevy Parkwood wagon. The big station wagon was the sign of family times in 59-60. It held plenty of stuff, 5 in the family and including that little dog.

The stories I hear are just classic for these inland sea adventures. The dad was a character. Gruff, opinionated and surprises everyone with his attitude of staking claim to a certain portion of the Salton Sea shoreline for the family vacation. No one was going to camp next to them if he could help it.

So, out came the shotgun shooting towards the salt water, when some other family rolled up to camp in the next door spot. That action always guaranteed the results of camping in isolation on the quiet shoreline.

Those stories are endless and it is part of growing up in So Cal during the 50s-60s era. Despite being from the OKC area, they moved enough times (job market permitting) to So Cal from 1950 on to become at one with the locals. From 1956 on, they were ensconced in the rapid growing OC housing area, near Knotts Berry Farm. When I met this family, they were OC locals.

A couple old Polaroids of my Willys in the day and 3 shots of it 'at the Winternationals' my sister did for me in her Photoshop class.

 

Wow that's awesome! i thought having mine 30yrs was good!
