Projects Chopped And Channeled 1932 Pickup

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by DeLuxe 32, Jan 21, 2021.

  1. I have a 32 pickup cab and repro bed that I'm hoping to put together this year. I have a bunch of parts to keep me busy for a long time but am after some advice. Of all the pickups that I like, the frames are swept a few inches in the front and z'd 10-12" in the rear. Think Jeff Norwell's 32........My question can i Zee my 32 frame or should I start from scratch and make something like the Boling Brothers do ?

Hot Rods And Custom Stuff in Escondido Ca. has offered an upswept chassis in the past.

  3. Hope your not tall.Im 6 feet 1 inch, and I look out the top 1 inch of my stock 32 PU windshield. Anything over a couple mile drive is no fun.I rarely drive it,but it looks nice in the garage.

Boling Bros makes a nice frame for the type of truck you are building Even if your down under there's lot of good ideas in the frame pictures. bolingbrothers.com

  5. Hey Gary, ive been looking at the Boling Brothers website and they make exactly what i need. Question is can i modify stock 32 rails to get the same stance? Or is it easier to start from scratch and bend up some rhs?

I e-mailed you some pictures of a couple chassis I've done with kicked up rears and one with a Z'd front.

  7. Thanks that's great....I'll most likely use my chassis and adjust to suit, although i could advertise it and see if i get any bites....shoildnt be hard to get some RHS bent up to replicate a 4-10 Boling Brothers frame.

In the mean time if anyone has any pictures of 32 chassis thay they've swept/z'd/or kicked up please post.

How about a “Bleed Sweep Frame” from ”Midwest Fabrication”! Give Bob a call.

  9. Hey Boner, that's a great looking pickup...... I've read all the threads on the Bleed sweep and will sweep the front of mine 4". My concern was that off the examples I've seen none of them started with stock 32 frame rails... they were model a, 2 x 4 tube, or 34's.

I don't have a channelled 32 pickup, but if I did it would be on a 32 frame. Having a 32 frame adds so much more coolness to the truck, even if the reveal is hidden. The gentle taper and curve of the rails softens an otherwise boring mechanical part. A frame made of rectangle tube is so ho-hum.

It's easy to give a slight kick to the front with a small piecut at the firewall, and it's easy to give a big kick to the rear with a larger piecut right behind the reveal.

  11. Thanks for your insight, i do happen to have a 32 frame . Probably the most logical way forward.

  12. As much as i like those pickups and I do....they are more shop truck less Hot Rod for my liking. If it comes out half as good as Jeff Norwell's or 1927Graham's I'll be a happy camper.

Channeled 5", chopped 2 1/2 or 3 (can't remember), trying now to figure out how to fit 3 pedals, 2 legs and a steering wheel in a place that just doesn't want to accommodate all of them.

  15. Yes... that's one of the biggest issues, pedal placement. Im going Auto to make it a little easier.

A good idea, if you have a skinny butt. Make sure you do some mock-up first to see how much room is taken up by the transmission and exhaust and rear ladder bars and crossmembers and brake master and . . .

I'd do a firewall mounted pedal to free up leg room.

  18. I have read that is what most guys use, but doesnt always give the best angle for your foot. Gary do you use the under dash master cylinder or firewall mounted?

  21. Finally got the pickup out of storage and into the garage. Going to cut 2" out of the roof. It has been chopped previously so getting the sheet metal off the A pillars may prove tricky.

After much deliberation I have decided to start from scratch with the chassis. Given what I want to do it seemed silly to cut up this frame.

    I chopped mine 3" & channeled it 5". The frame is Z-ed & is a 2" X 4" boxed Model A style. I'm about 5'9" & it fits me just right.

The frame is made from 2x4 inch 3/16 inch wall tubing.... The front rails are tapered... The tubing under the cab is 2x4 inch 1/2 inch wall... It is laid over on the 2 inch side... It gives the appearance that it is channeled but it isn't....

Just build a frame out of 2x4 3mm RHS.

That is after you have it all sorted how you are going to get it registered.

  26. Its crazy where the time goes....

I've drawn up same frame rails and will get them laser cut and I will weld them up. They are 4"-10" like Boling Bros. Currently have the body braced and am taking an additional 2" out of the cab. I will also lower the dash rail 3/4" and extending the cowl 1"

Rick Flake's "Barebones" 34 sits on 32 rails. He kicked the rear and pinched the front. barebones1.jpg

  28. I started working on the doors. Both will get a full skin, which gives me a chance to clean up the inside. 1 door will need an inner bottom repair, unfortunately the repair panel isn't as precise as I had hoped, the beads are know where near close, but I will make it work.
