...Hamber @ct1932ford's former Coupe...a stunning Hotrod...I did very little here digitally...just added the Moon Discs and cleaned up the modern surroundings added a border, select text...and black and whited it back to 1957...

This is a Showstopper...Dayuum...

Hello,

While reading an old Drag News from the old days, I came across a small ad for “Glamour Wrinkle Colors.” It was an ad for a surface coating that would highlight any valve cover or any metal surface. The perfect solution to a surface protecting coating. It certainly sounds like today’s term for powder coating that has seen its use many times over in hot rod building.

I can remember the time spent inside of the warm den that we had built on to our tiny Westside Long Beach house. It was a small U-shaped house about 800 sq ft. with the addition of a large brick patio in the “U”, that small approximately, 800 sq ft house turned into a larger home with two sets of French doors leading into and out of the newly constructed den. There was also a door leading to our bedroom and another one leading into the kitchen. Finally, huge sliding glass door was showcasing the rear yard and rumpus room that became our backyard garage.

From those cold nights when working in that rear backyard garage was too cold, I found myself working on those finned valve covers of our 283 SBC motor with some rubbing compound, mild sand paper, steel wool and polish to get a good contrast between the shiny covers and the area in between the fins.

We never thought of our shiny valve covers to make into a mini soap box derby race vehicle. We tried making a real life size soap box derby roller, we had the basic layout, but we never finished it. When these valve covers had some popularity, that we could do and get involved.

The usage of the plentiful inexpensive used valve covers could be had from any old junkyard/surplus yard. The tire/rim combination would have high speed ball bearings in the rims. The same ball bearings were the style used in constructing our 1/24 & 1/32 size slot cars for drag racing and road courses. Every advantage helps in both activities. But, real life took over.

Valve cover racing is a competitive event similar to the Pinewood derby, but vehicles are made from a valve cover from an internal combustion car engine, rather than of wood blocks. Valve cover racing is most commonly seen at car shows.

Rules for Construction of Valve Cover Race Car:

· No engine, propulsion, or moving weights. Gravity is your friend. (weights must be secured)

· Valve cover must be GM, from either a small block (283, 327 Cu. In.) or a big block (396, etc.)

· The valve cover must retain its original gasket sealing surface.

· The race car can have a chassis, but nothing may extend beyond the gasket surface on the front of the race car. This applies to the wheels also.

· There is a maximum of 4 wheels allowed, either inside or outside of the valve cover

· The race car must be clean (no sludge). If the race car drips oil or grease, it is disqualified.

· The dimensions of the race car are as follows: Maximum Length = 30 inches Maximum Width = 10 inches Maximum Height = 9 inches Maximum Weight = 8 pounds (official digital scales at the event will govern)

Maximum Wheel Diameter = 4 inches

 

Ha, ha Ed. I've always been better at breaking stuff then fixing it. lol

An oldie for runin shine

 

I no longer own the Coleman Coupe. It now belongs to 31Slim here on the HAMB.
I do however have many photos and drawings.

 

Oh those back road rides.

 

Got some event t-shirt artwork this week from my friend B-Scott featuring a couple other good friends HAMB-friendly cars.

 

I pulled an old AMT 3 in 1 62 Buick model from my hoard. I’m gonna try and build it. Hope to have it finished for next week. Box and instructions has some cool H.A.M.B. Art. Ron....
